AKL? BWV? 160 pts? 100pts?

So, my wife and I took the tour last Sept. Loved taking the tour and hearing about DVC thru Disney. We decided against buying shortly after crunching a ton of #'s when we returned home.
We take 3-4 trips a year w/ 1 at least at a mod/deluxe resort...and the rest at a value. Time has passed, very recently my wife told me that she wants to do it. This is strange to me because we both LOVE WDW. More-so me (see my signature ;)).

Anyway, she tells me she wants to buy Resale and only get 100 points. I am trying everything possible to get her to just let us go through Disney and buy into the minimum of 160. She doesn't seem to be having it. This is one of my struggles.

The other is that she is leaning more to getting them 100 points at the BWV, (a place we have never stayed before), and what I am pushing is getting the new AKV. We have stayed at AKL before and absolutely loved it there. It's just coming down to she don't wanna pay that much into the DVC right off the start of us getting into it.
She said if we could buy 100 points anywhere through Disney, she'd do it, but we cannot because of the 160 minimum.

I'd love to show her this thread and let her see my decision is the better one, so can you all help and make a case for me.?

Regardless, you all have great incite and I love coming here just to read what you all have to say. :thumbsup2

Various resorts have times/locations/types of villas that are impossible or next to it to get unless you own there. Ala BWV standard view, BWV view, OKW Grand Villa, AKV Concierge room, etc. There are all sorts of threads out there that show the pros and cons of resale vs purchase direct from Disney. Neither of your choices are better than the other, other than your's has more points available, her's has fewer. Her's might cost a bit less per point. Your's might be quicker (even so, anytime between now and mid-January could be hard to get).

So explain to her why that 7-11 month advantage at AKV is more important than the 7-11 month advantage at BWV.

Ok, never thought of that. I think having the 11 month is better myself...and would love to have that at AKV. I know even if we get our home thru BWV, we can stay at AKV, but that 11 month thing...really appeals to me, since that is the place I'd love to stay more. Especially when I want to be in it for the long run.

We bought in at AKV for 200 points and cant wait to go home. Prior to DVC we would go down to Disney yearly for 10 days and stay at a moderate resort. One thing we found out real quick is 200 points does not go as far as you would like  so we are already adding on a 100 point contract at a different resort. If you are willing to take trips that dont run through weekends and dont need a 1 or 2 bedroom unit you would probably be ok. We have 3 kids and need a little more space and I am of the thought if I am on vacation I am not "cheating" myself or "squeezing" into accomodations. We think the 300 point total will serve us well and absolutely love the two resorts we have:banana:

My advice would be somewhere between you and your spouse. Get 2 -100 point contracts. This will give you resale and resort flexability.

If you are purchasing through Disney, the first contract will have to be at least 160 points. You can't get any contract less than 160 with Disney for the first contract.

No, but you could buy your 100pt BWV contract and then add on 100 AKV points through Disney. You woudlnt' pay closing costs on the AKV contract, and MIGHT even be able to squeeze in on the double developer points offer if you hurry!

Its worth noting that there may not be a 100 point BWV contract that meets your needs readily available. It may be stripped of points and not be able to be used for a year. Even if one is available and has points available, count on it taking four months from offer to being in the system and being able to book your trip - which means that if you want a SV room for Food and Wine in 2008 you are probably too late to start looking.

I like resale (ours was a resale) but they are not for people who need to be timely, it can take patience before the correct contract comes through for you and more patience to close. And there are risks, the seller could back out or Disney could purchase the contract, leaving you back at the starting line. Ours took four months start to finish, and we had one seller back out. It wasn't fast.

The AKL contract on the other hand is pretty much a sure thing, and your guide will help you reserve BEFORE you even close.

So if you have time, you only need 100 points and you really want those BWV Standard View rooms, wait for the resale. But if you are planning a trip within the next year, I'd seriously consider buying direct.

One thing I didn't see mentioned is the fact that a BWV contract will expire 15 years before an AKV one will. If the additional years are important to you then that is a plus in the AKV column.

The general advice is to "buy where you want to stay". If you both love AKL then AKV may be the better choice. The home resort booking advantage at both of these resorts will be key for some of the more desireable units (AKV concierge and value, BWV standard view).

Also, as others mentioned you may not be able to get your desired UY right away with BWV, it just depends on what Disney has available (assuming you aren't going the resale route).

On the other hand, there aren't currently any AKV resales (at least not in quantity, I saw a couple threads where folks had seen one or two AKV resales that went very quickly). If you are going the resale route your only option would be BWV.

We just bought 200pts at AKV in April and are taking our first DVC trip in 2 weeks. From what I've heard from the first wave folks the remodeled AKV units in Jambo are pretty amazing.

Good luck!

We are for sure in a dilemma.
Yea, the length of term isn't a huge deal but it'd be nice to get it longer too if we got in at AKV.
I am pushing very hard to buy in DVC (thru Disney) with the AKV 160 contract, but the wife only wants to buy in at 100 (thru a Resale). As far as she is concerned (so it seems), she seems fine with most any Resort. It just that big jump in cost between the 100 points vs. the 160 points.
I know we'd be both extremely happy ay AKV, but it's just pulling the trigger.
I think she is definitely tired of me telling her that. I also keep telling her everyone wishes they had bought in earlier too, so we better get on the ball, but she don't think thats funny. :confused3 :)
Naw, its not that bad, but it is a big decision.

Itis a big decision. I am of the "buy where you want to stay" group. However a purchase at any DVC resorts is essentially staying on the property at WDW. I don't htink you will be disappointed with any location. The big step is whether to buy & then how many points at which resort. IMHO I don't think you can go wrong.
