AKL.....2008 points??

Hi I asked this in another thread but I am not sure if it will get noticed and we will be talking with our giude today so I am posting it seperatley in hopes someone knows the answer. If you buy and want a use year that has already passed...example June. Are you still going to get 2008 points?? We have december and will get 180 points on December 1st 2008. If we call and ask for June instead(we are still within 10 days) will we still get 2008 points??? We travel in August most of the time and if I understand use year..(and I am not sure I do) June would be MUCH better than December for us. Thanks fo any light you can shed on my total in the darkness!

If there are points avialable for June in a part that is already open or finished then yes. If June is avialable in a new section only that will open in 2009 than no but you will also not pay any dues until then.

I am a little slow on this so exuse me if I ask too may questions. So I would get 2008 points in the open section (jambo House) but not the new section of Kidani village because it would be open by June. Also I would have to pay dues if I get the open section. Is this right??

I'm not sure this will directly answer your question, but our situations are similar. I just purchased an add-on at AKL yesterday. I have a Feb. use year. So, yes, it has already passed. In lieu of 2008 AKL points (because Kidani is in the process of being built so the points aren't available for use) we were given developer points which can be used in the next year at SSR, the Disneyland hotels and I believe, II resorts for trade-out. We will get our usual deposit of points in Feb 2009 but they will still not be available for use until May 1, 2009 when AKL(Kidani) officially opens.

So, in one way you will get 2008 points but they will not be available for use at AKL. The good news is you don't have to pay maintenance fees on them. You start those with the 2009 AKL points.

I would speak with your guide about buying the use year that you would prefer. If there are points available for purchase in that use year they will sell them to you.

DVCSAMNH, When we bought we recieved 180 developer points for SSR and because the use year of December we would get 180 in Decenber 2008 and 180 in December 2009. This would allow us to use the developer points next year at SSR and bank the 180 from 2008. It would give us 360 for 210 (if my thinking is correct) So I guess my question is...Is this only possible with a use year of Deceber 2008?? Would we be losing 180 points some where if we want a June use year?? And if the points are tied to Jambo house and not Kidani village will we have to start paying dues?? Sorry for all the questions!

You would only pay dues from either when you purchase or when the building opens. So if you bought today and the use year you wanted was avialbale in Jambo house you woudl start paying dues from today. If the use year you wanted was only avialable in Kadani that is not open yet you will not pay dues until the month you choose. You will also not be able to stay until the first of the month your use year begins. If there are developer points or a free vactation it can be used in accordance with the rules DVC chooses....
Also understand that dues have nothing to do with the purchase, you will make payments or pay in full from when you buy not your use year. There was some confusion about this in the past.

I see the issue now! Sorry I missed it the first time. No, I did not receive 2008 use year points. So, I guess when you do a real nuts and bolts comparison you could possibly lose one year of points by asking for a June use year vs December unless as the PP said there are points available in Jambo House which are usuable now. I can tell you my guide didn't offer me any but I also didn't ask.

Most of the folks on these boards will tell you not to worry too much over use year. You hear people who have been owners since the beginning say it's never been a problem. I've been an owner for four years and my vacation plans are different now than they were four years ago. I would take the best deal available and go with the flow. It's really hard to plan now what your vacation habits are going to be years from now.

Thanks!! That helps me. There are so many in's and out's and different scenarios it is hard to absorb them all. It seems like the best deal is what we have now...even though for vacationing in August a december use year is not ideal. But I would not want to lose 180 points just to change my use year. Thanks to all of you DVC vets who put up with all of my newbie questions. You are a godsend to those of us looking for info!!

In fact people will add on a month before there use year starts get the points for the current use year plus the points for the next use year in a month any incetives they may be eligable for better only pay one months dues for the previous years points
this works best with a current resort but can be done with sold out ones if you time it right or your UY is avialable.

I'm talking Kidani points here. A June UY is after the May, 2009 opening of Kidani, so if they had June UY 2008 points available, then you'd get those. For those having UY's before May, then no, you would not get 2008 UY points because there is no Kidani before May, 2009.

So what you are saying is if we requested a Feb. Use year (you can bank until sept 31...which is better than what we have now because we travel in August and have to bank by july31) We could possibly get Feb 2008 point and than Feb 2009 point and than Feb 2010 points. And since Kidani village is not open we would still get 180 developer points at SSR?? This sounds a little too good to be true. But oh how amazing that would be!! That would be 540 points plus 180 in DP!!

If you banked the points would then be avialable for use starting with your next use year not Sep if you had a FEB use year and you can only bank one year of points.
so if you purchased today a 180 points in a Sept UY in a building that was open today you would get the 2008 points and on Sept 1 you will get the 2009 points. You would need to bank the 08 points immediatly.. which would give you 360 points on Sept 1 this year you could borrow your 2010 points if you would like. This would exclude any promotions (DP or vacations) they are offering.
I would ay at this point though they most likely would only let you buy an OCT. UY as it is very late in AUG but you never know.
and yes if they allowed you to buy a SEPT UY you would only pay 10 days of dues (prorated so maybe a few $ more) for the 08 points.

I guess the best way to understand it is you can not pay Dues or better maintenance fees on something that does not exist yet. You are buying partial ownership of a room the land is leased or renetd to DVC so you have no ownership. Any responsability of dues etc. on the land will taken care of by the builder until the room you have ownership in is avialble to stay in. That is unless they allow to pitch a tent

So most people are saying they have bought points for use years in 2008 that have not come yet...September,October, November and December. Is it not possible if you are new buyer to purchase months in 2008 with points that have already gone past ex. Feb,June etc?? If you could would you be actually be buying Kidani since it is not open in 2008 and would you get 2008 points and SSR developer points?

For an add on, if you have a Dec UY and you get 2008 points, plus developer points, it seems to me that you get an extra years worth of AKL points over someone who purchases and has a say, April UY (since they are only getting AKL points in 2009 and developer points).

Is this correct?

That is what I am wondering..add on or not. It seems you might be getting an extra years worth of points ONLY if you have a use year after August 2008 since the other months have already passed. I am not sure if it is possible to go back in time per say??
