Can someone tell me about dinner @ Akershus?

Is it a buffet, or AYCE served family style, or menu?

Never been there and considering the possibility.

Also, what is the food like?

DH and DD are very picky eaters and won't touch fancy stuff.

Fancy to them is even mushrooms, onions, peppers, etc. DH is plain meat & potatoes guy. DD is just plain picky!

The last time we went (11/2008) it was a combination of cold buffet and menu options. In other words, your appetizers were off of a cold buffet bar and than your hot meal was off of a menu.
I thought the food was good. I liked the cold bar, there was smoked salmon, shrimp, cheeses, etc.
The hot meals I think meat oriented (lamb was one I believe).
My kids are picky eaters, but for them seeing the princesses outweighed eating something that may have not been a favorite of theirs.

Then I would not do dinner at Akershus!

If you are breakfast people than I would highly recommend going that route. Unless things have changed - breakfast is served family style with a pastry/fruit bar that is a buffet. We have done this twice - food was great and so was the princess interaction!

I have friends who went as a large group of 17 during April 2009. They could not get breakfast ADR's and opted for the dinner option. We are from the south - meat and potato people - they said that was the worst meal they had all week. They tried to be careful and ordered what they thought would go along with their tastes but the adults said they just could not eat the food. As soon as the meal was over they all went and ate again at a CS. On the other hand, I have a cousin who took her family for lunch and said while it was not "good" by their tastes - it was o.k. They are a family that tends to experiment more with food though.

and see if there is something that your family might enjoy. It is Norweigan food so the taste, seasoning and combinations are much different than what my family will enjoy. Breakfast, however, is extremely tasty!

This is what I am afraid of!! We will end up at another venue for a make-up meal! And if that happened, DH would be none too happy!!

I did look @ the Allears menu listing, and this was why I was questioning the type of meal being served. Since it is a combo buffet/ordered meal, their site makes sense now.

I think we will stick to the breakfast buffets across the board. That's what we did last year and it went very well.

Just wish I had a more adventurous family so I could try some of the other places.

Oh well, better full and sad than hungry and angry!!

I took my DD there for dinner for our girls trip and didn't like the food at all. I experiment with food sometimes, but none of it thrilled me at all. Of course this is just my opinion, and I'm sure there are people that loved the food there.

We loved dinner but it is not for the picky eater. Breakfast is much better IMHO.

Appetizer at both is from a cold buffet table, at dinner this is salami, lox, herrings, shrimp and fruit in the main. At breakfast you still get the smoked salmon and fruit but also a good choice of fresh pastries.

Main course at dinner is a bit hit and miss. If you like fish you are ok if not then the choices are limited. Fine if you are a human dustbin and eat anything but not good for the faint-hearted. Breakfast entrees are a cooked bacon sausage, egg and a wonderful cheese and potato bake.

Dessert at dinner is a plate of 3 served family style.

We thought dinner was fine, the characters amazing but three out of the four of us eat most things. DD basically ate fruit for dinner.

Breakfast we all loved and the characters were just as good.

We really enjoyed our meal here and my DH is a meat and potatoes guy as well. Here's a tidbit from my TR:

Now on to the Princess dinner. We arrived a little early and had to wait. When our time arrived, we were taken inside to have a photo taken with Belle. DD17 is totally not interested in princesses so it was just the rest of us girls in the pic. The buffet here is grand. The best swiss cheese I've had in a long, long time. I highly recommend this dinner even if you're not into the princesses. The food was really good. I can't remember the names of the dishes but we had 4 different entrees at our table and they were all delish. Then they bring you these desserts to try and it was all good! My kids got to meet the princesses that they've never met before and it was a dream come true for me to see it, even at their ages. We even got DSonIL to get his picture taken with Cinderella! We'll use it for blackmail at a later date.

We really liked the food at Akershus. My DD is a picky 3 year old. She loved the grilled chicken and potatoes on the children's menu, and we were really glad to give her something that wasn't another fried chicken tender. As for your meat-eater-- The Kjottkake is basically a spiced up meatloaf (I thought it was good) and the Pork Shank might be another option.
