Akershus help needed

On our Jan trip my wife and I want to try every Epcot pavillion food, its gonna be tough so we are going to have to squeeze a few in during lunchtime., one of which is Akershus. Akershus seems to get good ratings from the Dis-community. My understanding is that the menu is "family style buffet", but when I look at the menu, it appears they list choices that may be ordered. So im confused, is this a buffet, or do you order from the menu? Also, how are the non-seafood entrees, good? Neither of us order seafood.


Also wondering if anyone knew what this was:

Traditional Kjottkaker
with a cauliflower, garlic, cheese infused mashed potato,
and a red wine beet sauce.

Is this beef ... or a meatless dish of some sort.

I've had this before, prior to the restaurant going all character meals. It is one of the traditional "seasonal" dishes. It was very good, it has meat in it, I think maybe lamb or beef. It's been so long, I don't remember any specifics, except that it was some sort of patty. Part of the meal is also a cold buffet for salads and cheese. Maybe with winter they'll also have soup, they used to, but that was also quite a while ago.

We did the Princess Storybook Lunch in May. They brought out assorted meats, cheeses and some dips for apps. We chose from a limited menu for our entress. I had the Salmon (very good), DH had the pasta (very good) and the kids split some pasta with sauce (ok for them). Then they brought out the shared dessert plate, also very good. (Maybe it was the 2 jumbo Carlsberg beers we had.....) The princesses were great - and my DS was in awe of Jasmine (you go guy!) We had a lot of fun!! I had read somewhere they may be changing this format..so this may not help. It was fun to eat in the "castle" then go on the Norway ride.

The cold buffet has returned fairly recently, it was still all table service when southjersymom went in May. Hot foods are table service.

I was there 2 weeks ago for the PSB lunch and the cold buffet was there. It was small, but pretty good. The hot entree I got was the Pasta Akershus. It was very good.

We had lunch at Akershus on Wednesday. The kjottkaker is meatloaf. I had it and it was very good. It sounds kind of strange, but tasted like normal meatloaf with gravy. Hubby had trout, also enjoyed. His came with the mashed potatoes with cauliflower too and he actually liked it! (not a veggie fan) Kids had pasta with tomato sauce, always a good choice. Lunch starts with a buffet of cold appetizer items (cheeses, pasta salad, salad bar, bread, etc.). You pick 1 entree of the menu, and they bring you a sampler of desserts (rice pudding with strawberries, lingonberry bars, and chocolate mousse). It was loud and hectic like most park restaurants, but there were 5 princesses there (Cinderella, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Aurora) and it was the highlight of my 3 year old daughters' trip.

I went to Akershus on Friday for lunch. They have an all you can eat buffet of cheese, bread, cold salads ( egg & ham, tomato, potato etc.) smoked salmon, smoked & peppered herring, salad w/ all the fixing and few deli meats. They then give a separate menu for your entree. I had the braised lamb which tasted just like beef stew ( just OK) and DH had Slow-Cooked Meatballs with a rutabaga mash. He didn't touch the rutabaga ( it was mixed w/ carrots and the flavor was overpowering) He did say the meatballs were good though. The best part was the desserts! The Traditional Rice Cream was to die for and DD4 devoured the chocolate mousse, I was the only one who ate the Lingonberry TarT since DD4 was too busy w/ the mousse & DH doesn't eat nuts. Its like a shortbread bottom layer w/ lingonberry perserves and then a sweet Oatmeal Streusel on top. Our main reason for eating here was due to the Princesses but if you asked if I'd eat here again I probably wouldn't. We saw Ariel dressed in a Mint green gown, snow white, cinderella, belle and mary poppins Hope this helps!!

Here you go! Kjottkaker are yummy... my Nanny used to make them! We loved Akershus!! Lots of the things I remembered from Nanny's house! But my DH found plenty he enjoyed as well... and for dessert my DS got a cute cookie to "paint" with frosting!

Kjottkaker (Norwegian Meatballs)

Meatballs:
4 slices white bread
3/4 cup hot skim milk
1 pound extra-lean ground beef
1/2 pound ground pork
2 eggs, beaten
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/8 teaspoon allspice
1/2 cup chopped onion
2 teaspoons salt
2 teaspoons vegetable oil

With Gravy:
4 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons beef bouillon base
2 1/2 cups boiling water

Let me recommend it for breakfast - it was one of the best meals we had in Disney! I don't know how princess-tolerant you are - since DD5 wanted to maximize her princess interface, this meal was a must for us. But it was delicious - especially the sticky buns and the great coffee. They even throw in some fresh fruit so you can convince yourself that you're doing something good for yourself.

Yumm! My cousins & I called 'Chocolate Cheese' when we were kids! (Of course it's not chocolate... just really wonderful cheese!)

very good! We almost didn't go because of mixed reviews that we got. It was one of our top restaurants. My husband said you could make a meal out of the cold cut buffet.(which is before you order a meal off the menu) We all had a differant meal. My husband had the meal that was meatloaf- he said it was good! My 15 yr.old son had venison stew - he loved it! My 17 y rold had I think that mashed potato w/ cheese and something else. It was his favorite and mine at the table. I had some seafood(I think the salmon?). It was good, but I liked my sons much better. My daughters had the pasta dishes and didn't care for them.(they were tired and tired of food) But I think I tried them and they were blah. One was from the kids menu and the other off the adult I think? I just remember liking my sons entree the best! There was only about 7 meals to pick from, so we hit quite a few of them. I think we all really liked the cold buffet that you served yourself. We all hated the goats brown cheese!(and I love cheese! I think the yellow goats cheese at their fast food place was good. What I am saying was the cheese was good, I think it was goats cheese.)

We had a great experience there!!!!!! We went on Sept. 22 @ 4:20pm. It was unusually slow. For the first hour we had the room we were in to ourselves. I loved our room! It had a fireplace and was lighter then the first dining room you walk in to. They spaced the people all around, so it wasn't busy right around our table. We ended up not seeing any princesses for at least an hour after arriving. But it was excellent!! We were able to enjoy our meal in peace and quiet. When the princesses come they all pretty much come in succession. I thought it was much more relaxed here then at the CRT. They were more relaxed and spent more time with you. Maybe it was just because it wasn't as busy. I would have to say dinner @ 4:20 was great, but then maybe it is usually not busy. When we were eating dessert was when it was getting noisier and starting to fill in more tables beside us.
We also got better pictures here than at CRT. I personally think it is prettier here then at CRT.( I don't like dark places)

DD and I ate there on our girls trip on 10/7. We LOVED it. We had great interaction with the princesses. I even mingled with the ladies. The food was wonderful. DD is very picky and she loved it. We will definately do this again when we return "home" in May

Hee. My husband called it "Candy Cheese" while growing up, in much the same vein. We have PSL plans in February, and I'm looking forward to eating the delicious food again!
