While on the safari ride at AK over the weekend, I noticed a couple of zebras on the Savanna. They are Hartman’s Mountain Zebras.

They were on the far side of the area.
The guide said they are letting them get acclimated to the area and the other animals before letting them roam nearer to the trucks.

He also said some of the other animals were surprised at their presence and were also going through a process of accepting them.

I remember years ago the zebras were plentiful on the savanna, then suddenly they were gone, and no one could tell me why.

I am so glad to see them back!

From what I heard, The Zebras ran around like a group of crazed jr high boys causing mischief. (mostly delaying safari vehicles)
For a short period, they moved the zebra to the last animal segment, but they caused trouble there, too, so zebras could only remain on the AKL savanna’s.

From what I know of zebras, that doesn't surprise me. When we visited a safari park in Texas they warned us repeatedly to keep our windows rolled up if the zebras were near the road because they had a habit of biting people. Of course, ostriches are also terrible creatures and AK doesn't seem to have trouble with them on the safari.

(I'm kidding re: any animal being terrible--they're just being animals. But I do have what I feel is an entirely rational fear of ostriches)

They were naughty and couldn't behave themselves.

This made me laugh my now 17 yr old got big my a zebra at a “county fair” when we lived in PA. I totally forgot about that .

Zebras were removed because they are the jerks (I'd use the word used by the safari guides if Dis allowed it) of the savannah.

What about the lions? There were no lions when I went in June or October.
They are there. They roam in many areas that are not visible from the vehicle but they are still members of the savannah.
I have a video of them roaring at Christmas and a photo of them sleeping on Monday.

The AK safari guides used that word? (I'm assuming a word that sort of rhymes with Faygo)

So if someone is being a jerk, we should call them a Zebra? (I wanted to use that in another thread but I thought people wouldn’t get the reference.)

Thanks. In the past when I’ve gone and they weren’t visible, the driver would at least mention them. On my last two visits, the drivers didn’t even mention the lions when we got to their usual hang out, which made me think they weren’t there at all.
