AirTran Will Begin Flights From Detroit Metro
Discount Air Carrier Will Start Nonstop Service Nov. 8
POSTED: 7:19 am EDT August 4, 2005
ROMULUS, Mich. -- Discount air carrier AirTran Airways says it will begin flying in November from Detroit Metropolitan Airport, which is dominated by Northwest Airlines.
AirTran Holdings Inc. in Orlando, Fla., said Wednesday that on Nov. 8, it will start nonstop service from Detroit Metro to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and Orlando.
It said it will start flying from Detroit Metro to Florida's Sarasota Bradenton International Airport on Feb. 15.
The airline said it will fly Boeing 717 aircraft with 12 business and 105 coach seats.
"Detroit is the largest market in the country we do not serve directly," AirTran Vice President Kevin Healy said in a news release. "We've worked closely with the Wayne County Airport Authority and business leaders in the area to bring AirTran Airways and America's youngest all-Boeing fleet to the Motor City."
Minnesota-based Northwest Airlines handles about 75 percent of the passengers at Detroit Metro.
AirTran also operates from Flint's Bishop Airport, flying to Minneapolis, Cleveland, Chicago, Atlanta and Tampa.
