Airtran or Delta out of DTW?

It looks like these are my choices...and while we've always flown Airtran (SW doesn't have no stops and I just don't trust Spirit)....their prices are so much higher now and comparable with Delta. What are your experiences? Thanks!

We've flown with both and been pretty happy with both. If the prices are comparable though, then I'd go with Delta. The thing about Airtran (at least from the airport we fly out of) is that there is only 1 flight out a day. This means if something happens, then we are waiting until the next day or the day after that to try and get on another flight, whereas Delta usually has several more flights out to the same place that same day. That would be the deciding factor for me! Good luck with your decision!

Jumping in to see what everyone thinks - we're flying out of DTW early august and I am bewildered - it didn't used to be this complicated. What's a reasonable price to pay? it's just two adults but we will need a bag each...this paying for bags thing from Spirit is not impressing me.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone has to say.

No joke!! Aren't prices crazy?! This will be almost double what we paid last year same week...end of august

Air tran charges for seat assignments Delta does not, so if you have kids I would factor in that cost, I believe it is $6 each way. I just paid $200 rt for Delta (flying in May out of DTW). Air Tran was the same but $48 more for seat assignments.

Seriously?! I would LOVE that price!! Hoping prices go down in the next couple months for august

We always fly in and out of DTW. We have used Spirit both ways (back when they were cheaper than everone else), Airtran once, and now just Delta. Others are right, the seat fees can add up quickly. I would say if you for sure have your dates set in stone, start checking multiple times a day on Delta. We went down last August and I booked our airline in January for $128 pp round trip non stop both ways!

What?!? That is crazy cheap!!! I check once a day and when I put in the times I want...morning departure and afternoon return...of course it is more expensive :(.... Hasn't been below $300 rt in weeks....but I'm hopeful! If it hits $200 I'm booking!

We always take the first flight down (last August it was 8:30, two weeks ago we went down and it was 8 am) and we usually come back on the 4ish flight. I would check multiple times a day because it's crazy how often and by how much it changes. I remember I booked that price on a Thursday morning. The trip we just came back from I booked each leg seperately. The flight down was running really cheap (I think $65 pp) but the return was keeping the price high so I booked the first leg in Oct and waited for a good (or at least better) price on the second. I think it was higher because it was the day afetr MLK day, but we still came in under $200 pp total.

Wow! I am so envious! Those are the exact times I want ...the 8:30 departure and 3:50 return ...8/26-9/1. I will keep trying...and praying:worship:

I'm guessing your prices will be higher because of the days of the week. We always go down on a Tuesday and back on a Tuesday or Wednesday. Good luck though:shamrock:

I posted this on a similar thread so apologize if it sounds familiar to some of you....

DH and I traveling down the week leading into Easter to watch our DS's HS band. Our dates are not flexible at all and it is a short trip. I wasn't sure that the trip was actually happening until recently but have been watching my dates for a while (3/31-4/5) and they have been really high ($600+) to fly non-stop on Delta.

I would prefer to fly Delta out of DTW but went ahead and book Spirit when a non-stop flight dropped to $300 round trip on my dates. That said... with all the fees (bag check and seat assignment) it comes to $400 per seat but that is WAY better than anything on Delta for my dates. I'll be keeping my fingers crossed for easy travel with Spirit!

I would just say watch everything like a hawk because when an airlines does drop fares it could only be for a few hours or a day just to fill seats on a particular flight. We are traveling in the evening and returning early morning so probably flights they had to reduce. When I checked my same flight a few days later for kicks it had increased by over $100 already.

Good luck.

me too. are you waiting to book? i'm never sure how long to keep waiting that a better deal will come out. Right now I'm looking at about 700 for the two of us - that seems like a lot! :confused3

We flew Delta from Detroit to Orlando Jan 7. There were 7 of us and I paid $200 each. I bought the tickets sometime in Mid to late November. We were satisfied. Everything was on time and we had no problems.

I would wait to book, when I was looking a couple months ago for my May trip it was some thing like $270, finally came down to a price I was happy with 4 months before my trip.

I watched the prices bounce up and down for a couple months before I booked our flights on delta out of DTW 10 days ago. I was hoping for prices to come down a bit but since there are 8 of us flying out together I was afraid to wait too long and not be able to get the seats we wanted. We had very specific flight times that we wanted.

I ended up paying 235.00 pp including taxes and fees for early August.

Side note, ChrisParker it looks like we are arriving at Disney the same day.

I'll be keeping my fingers crossed that flight prices come down before you book.

Thanks for that! What airline did you end up booking? Was 235 all in with taxes, etc? Do you remember what day of the week you booked it? I'm told this may make a difference. :) Yes - looks like the same day. We're getting married on the 4th, driving to the Westin and (hopefully) flying out the morning of the 5th. Maybe we'll be on the same plane. :goodvibes
