Last year on two trips (August and December), Airline 24-hour in advance online check-in resulted in a preassigned seat with an option to change to another available seat, if any. Others here reported similar experiences.
Today when I checked in precisely 24 hours in advance, I was "preassigned" to 11A, the very first seat in coach, and all other seats were shown as available! So apparently the seats are again not preassigned, and it's first come-first served. Is this what others have experienced?
So I moved to 11C (aisle) just on general principles. I had planned to pay $50 for a business-class upgrade, but now maybe I won't!
