Airtran A+ Rewards Question

Hi fellow DISers!

I have a question about flying on an A+ Rewards pass with Airtran. I was thinking of using credits to fly to Phoenix from Atlanta this Fall. Every time I check in for any Airtran flight, they ask if I want to pay $$ to upgrade to business class. I always pass, since I take short flights, but for Phoenix, I might consider it. Do they only offer this upgrade to passengers who paid for their ticket or can those flying on a redeemed credits ticket also get the option to pay for the upgrade.

Yes, you can pay to upgrade to Business class if you're flying on a reward flight. If you have an extra 4 credits to spare, you can also book a reward upgrade a day before your flight. You don't have to wait until the 24 hour mark. Anytime the day prior is fine.

Thanks. My friend was going to give me the ticket and I didn't want to use more of her credits for the upgrade. That's why I was wondering if I could pay out of pocket. I have 6 credits of my own, but not enough to pay for the trip. I wonder if they would let me use 4 of my credits to upgrade my ticket that she is giving me using her credits. If not, I'm willing to pay out of pocket, but I don't know if that's possible.

Yes, you can pay for the upgrade when you get to the airport the day of your flight. You can also use 4 of your credits to upgrade the ticket she booked for you. You would simply call the day before the flight and tell them you would like to book an upgrade on your ticket by using your credits in your account. It doesn't matter who's credits booked the reward ticket. Otherwise, just inquire if there's an upgrade available to purchase when you get to the airport if you just want to pay for it.

Just a reminder that if you want to pay for an upgrade, get to the airport early. Upgrade seats are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and I never see many empty business-class seats.
