Airport security with an insulin pump?

We're heading to see the Mouse this winter. My son has diabetes, and will be on an insulin pump by then. I know we will need to be at the airport early, with a note from his doctor. How does he get through the metal detectors though? Will I have to take the site off, and put a new one on after?

For another dumb question - his Omnipod uses a remote control to bolus his insulin. Will we be able to use it during the flight, or would I have to shut it off?

When you get to airport Security just tell them that he has an insulin pump. He will probably be wanded and asked to lift up his shirt to show the pump.

Normally all electronic devices are supposed to be turned off from door closing until the aircraft has reached 10,000 feet, and on descent from 10,000 feet until on the ground.

if you look in post #15 of the disABILITIES FAQs thread, you will find some helpful links to information about air travel with disabilities. There are links to several pages on the Transportation Security Administration website (the ones that will be most helpful to you will be under the heading: Air Travel with Disabilities and Special Needs). The link to Travel with Medication and medical Devices includes information about diabetes - the link directs you to the medication section of that page, but scroll around and you will find a specific section about diabetes.

For the specific questions about the Omnipod, as Cheshire Figment mentioned, usually you can't use any electronic devices until the plane reaches a certain altitude/point in the flight. And, at landing, there is another point where electronic devices can't be used.
There are several posters here who are pumpers and can probably give their experience. You may also be able to get good information from the company that makes the pump. Also, look at the airline website - usually the disability information is not out there where you will see it easily, but if you do a search on the airline website using the word "disability" or "wheelchair", you should be able to find information.
