Airport Scanners - Worthless?

This scares the $#!+ out of me. A waste of money and totally ineffective.

An undercover TSA agent was able to get through security at Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport with a handgun during testing of the enhanced-imaging body scanners, according to a high-ranking, inside source at the Transportation Security Administration.

The source said the undercover agent carried a pistol in her undergarments when she put the body scanners to the test. The officer successfully made it through the airport's body scanners every time she tried, the source said.

"In this case, where they had a test, and it was just a dismal failure as I'm told," said Larry Wansley, former head of security at American Airlines. "As I've heard (it), you got a problem, especially with a fire arm."

Wansley said covert testing by the TSA is commonplace -- although failing should be rare.

The TSA insider who blew the whistle on the test also said that none of the TSA agents who failed to spot the gun on the scanned image were disciplined. The source said the agents continue to work the body scanners today.

Wansley said that is a problem.

"This was only a test, but it's critically important that you do something, because if that person failed in the real environment, then you have a problem," he said.

The TSA did not deny that the tests took place or the what the results were.

The agency would only provide the following statement:

"Our security officers are one of the most heavily tested federal workforces in the nation. We regularly test our officers in a variety of ways to ensure the effectiveness of our technology, security measures and the overall layered system. For security reasons, we do not publicize or comment on the results of covert tests, however advanced imaging technology is an effective tool to detect both metallic and nonmetallic items hidden on passengers."

TSA agents who spoke to a reporter agreed that the body-imaging scanners are effective -- but only if the officers monitoring them are paying attention.

Why does it scare you? Were you under some illusion that the TSA was doing something to protect you? Most frequent flyers realize that the TSA is doing "Theater" of secuirty, but nothing that really helps.

Thier assumption is that (a) terrorists ONLY do what they have done before (b) terrorists would NEVER steal my ID and fly as me but fly under a known name and (c) security and "bullying" are related.

Are you safer now then pre 9/11? Sure. But it's not due to the theater! It's due to the real law enforcement efforts of people like your local police, the FBI etc... not poorly trained, poorly paid people who think that "screaming" is good

Remember that airline employees and airport employees are "exempt' from a lot of these "measures" that make us "safe" Of course one of the original liquid bomb plotter worked at the airport.....

All the TSA proves is that we are willing to give up or civil rights if someone "scares' us even if the "loss" actually does little to nothing to protect us.. that should be what scares you!

Further to my above comment, TSA is a joke. All it does is keep good people honest. How many terrorists have they caught? How many American terrorists have done anything in an airport? The only ones that have are islamic and they are exempt from pat-downs and the nudie scanners. It is a joke. It is about government control and scaring innocent people.

Very well said, both of you! :cheer2:

A) Before 9/11 and the TSA (when we just had standard metal detectors) how many hijackers/terrorists were caught? Since they didn't catch any, that means the metal detectors weren't needed, right?
B) Do you have any facts showing Islamic people are exempt from pat-downs & scanners?
C) Why am I bothering?:confused3

It is a wee bit horrifying. I don't want to hear from the TSA that their 'officers' are well trained and well tested. A bunch of them just allowed an armed passenger through security. And they weren't disciplined?? Nothing??
Everyone here knows how I feel about name calling and other 'slurs' toward an entire group of people based on the actions of a few. But I have a feeling that there are many TSA employees that are outraged as well.

Even one weapon making it through security is too many. This is what these scanners and employees are supposed to be catching for crying out loud!! Nope, every single one of those TSA employees that didn't 'see' the weapon should be dealt with, and dealt with harshly. John Q public has to go through all this aggravation to get on a plane and these agents can't see a gun going through??? Why bother making the rest of us suffer if the TSA isn't going to do it's job???

A word to the wise here people...be careful what you post. Be sure you are posting the truth and not being sensational. I really doubt that anyone is exempt from the TSA screeners.

Again, read some news.

Again, read some news.
I did. Not one of these sites appeared to be a news site to me:

IF the only reason the Muslim woman is chosen for secondary screening is that she's wearing a hijab, then the only part of her that can be patted down is her head and neck - and she can do it herself if she requests, and in a private screening room if she requests. Her hands will then be tested for explosives.

Really interesting. This blog - NOT news - claims "facts" not stated in CAIR's press release quoted by The Blaze, above.

This non-news site claims the same misinformation as "fact".

A message board. It might have been more advisable to link to the news site linked in the first post :)

Not a news site, but states that ANYONE can refuse the scan.

Page not found - either the link is wrong or the information is gone.

Before you accuse me of spreading propaganda, please read some news. ;)

As noted by Katyiee none of the links you posted are news. None of the links you posted even support your statement.

Did you think we're so stupid that none of us would check your links and actually read the propaganda? Did you post gibberish that you found elsewhere on the web and didn't even bother reading it?:confused3

Either alternative is very disturbing.

I think Luv2cthemouse actually may be a TSA agent

Use of unsupported data to try to scare folks
Prejudice
Trying to create unneeded fear
No addition of value to the process

Yep . It is a TSA agent.

Really, you think ALL TSA agents are like that?:confused3 While I agree there are some bad apples, I feel the MAJORITY (by far) are simply people trying to do their jobs to the best of their ability.

As a weekly traveler my impression is pretty :sad2:

But you are right. The poster is probably a member of TSA management. That is where the truly clueless are making up the theater we endure

I like the idea of allowing civilians to carry hand guns on planes but with a bullet exchange program. TSA would exhange the bullets for lower power, non pierceing bullets at check in, and exchange back at baggage pick up.

It's amazing they did not catch the gun but they caught my wristwatch last month. I went through the scanner, they radioed back to check my left arm.:confused3

I was getting really irritated at MSP a couple of weeks ago. The lines were all long but I've found that the line at the far end near the USAirways counter moves faster (since most people are flying Delta, which is at the other end). It was really slow. When I got closer to the front of the line, I saw the reason. There was a woman TSA officer checking ID's and she was stopped and chatting to each person that came through! Plus there were 2 other officers just standing there. The line was getting longer and longer. A foreign guy got to the front (I heard him talking another language) and she kept looking and looking at his passport before finally calling someone else over. Finally her shift change came. So someone came to relieve her and one of the guys just standing there started checking also. Finally the line moved! It was probably about 40 minutes total and it was the middle of the day!
