Thanks to a great Ding offer we are going to Disney in May.:woohoo: We usually leave out of BWI, but Philly had better fare, so my question is Can you tell me about the airport? We'll be leaving at 7 pm. I did a search and only found info on parking. What's the airport like? Is it easy to navigate? How's the security wait? Any info would be great. I have looked at their website, but I like the personal opinions of the Dis. Thanks again.:)

I'm definitely not an expert, but we have flown out of Philly several times and have never had any problems. We've taken a limo to the airport, parked offsite and on the last trip, parked AT the airport. I would NOT park at the airport again! It is much easier to park offsite and have the shuttle take you right to your terminal. Inside the airport, I have found it very easy to find our way around. Have never had a long wait for security. DS12 was picked for random security check last year and even then did not have to wait long. Everyone has always been very friendly. Good luck!

I've actually had better luck parking at the airport. You have the choice of either parking across from your terminal (walking distance from parking garage--more expensive) or economy parking (large lot with shuttle buses-cheaper). I've done both and have never had a problem with economy. I find the wait for the economy parking shuttle is less than waiting for an off-site parking shuttle.
Philadelphia airport is quite easy to navigate. Its broken down into various terminals (letters) depending on your airline. There have been a few times (closer to 9/11) when I've waited in a long security line, but its usually not much of a problem.

Philly security lines are hit or miss I've had lines of 5-10 minutes but I've also had lines of 45 minutes to an hour. I would always err on the side of caution with their lines. another way into Philly airport that is easy is the train. stops right at the airport terminal very easy to use and convenient.

Thanks guys, all the info is great.

We used to park in the economy lot until they were doing some work on that lot and ever since we have been parking off site and we love it. We have used Pacifico Parking. You drive your car to their lot. An attendant then drives you in your car to the airport to drop you off. When you get back and have your luggage in hand you call them and they pick you up and drive you back to the lot where you pay your bill. It's very easy and you can get coupons online. We've only used Pacifico b/c it works for us. There are several other places to park off site too that other members use. All of the lots are only 5 minutes from the airport.

Another thing to consider is that some of the hotels offer packages where you stay over the night before your flight and then you can keep your car at their lot and take a shuttle to the airport.

Like the OP said, security is hit or miss. We've waited anywhere from 5 minutes to 45 minutes.

The airport is big and the parking is annoying. Leaving at 7 I would get there by 5. I also have had to wait about and hour since 9/11 but haven't flown since 11/05 out of Philly and that was @ 5am. You can drop your luggage off at the curb.

Good morning, Shannon,

I fly out of PHL almost weekly, and while its improved, this airport is the absolute worst of the East coast!

Let's start with parking... There is a link in this thread, provided by another poster, leading you to a post I made about Winner Airport Valet Parking on Essington Avenue. It's about a mile from departures. I've had my vehicle broken into twice while using economy or long-term parking. Maybe I'm a little biased (go figure) however I would not recommend using that parking, opting instead for Winner.

Curb-side baggage and check-in service depends on the airline used. USNightmair's service is sometimes okay and sometimes terrible...it largely depends on the Skycap providing the service. Other airlines have been pretty much the same. (If you are unfortunate enough to be using USNightmair, I'd use curb-side...since the lines for the electronic replacements for Ticket Agents is typcially lengthy.)

As someone else posted, the TSA line lengths depend upon the flight time. If you're flying Monday through Friday between 7am and 10am, and from 3pm to around 7pm, you will be waiting a while to get through the ratmaze. The TSA folks have improved from being completely gruff to being somewhat nice. I've found a few to possess an attitude about dealing with the public, however if you're nice to them, most will be nice in return. (Their job <fill in an appropriate word here> and I believe they deserve to be treated nicely.) Figure about 20-30 minutes for the Security Checkpoints at the worst of travel time...all other times vary, but have generally less line waits.

The terminals are pretty long, however most have shops to browse and eateries. One exception is (I think, someone correct me here, please) terminal E...once through TSA, there's nothing...no shops, no eateries, only a small shop or two which serve unedible "stuff".

Upon your return, baggage handling is terrible. On the rare occasion I've checked my bags, I've waited anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes at baggage claim. The baggage handlers at PHL are the worst. Check the boards for where you're luggage is SUPPOSE to be, and count on it being on another belt.

Lastly about PHL, I always plan on arriving at parking 2 hours before flight time. AND, if you smoke, forget about lighting-up...even in the bars. Take your last puffs outside in the designated areas, if you do smoke. (I'm glad I quit a number of years ago....)

I hope this helps....

Mike, Thanks so much for the detailed descriptions. Looks like I'm leaning towards off site parking. We're leaving at 7pm on a Sunday, in my mind I'm thinking it'll be slow. I know that's probably wishful thinking. I figured we'd get there 2 hours before and wait. Thanks for the smoking tip, too.(I haven't quit, yet.:upsidedow )
