Airport for private planes?

What airport would one use when flying to WDW via private plane? My cousin is a pilot and he's asked me to find out. Thanks!

Doing a quick google search (about 30 seconds, so there could be others, but is recommended), it appears that Orlando Executive (ORL) would be the airport.

You might be able to fly into MCO as well...not sure...but I see small Cessna's all the time....

Is it just me, or is there something odd about a pilot who doesn't know how to figure out what airport to use?

My guess is that he's heard that there is a strip on-property but can't find it in official sources and is wondering what the deal is. The deal is that there USED to be an airstrip on-site, but it's closed now. (This is Lake Buena Vista STOLport, the strip near the MCO parking lot that famously had rumble strips on the taxiway that caused the plane's tires to play zip-a-dee-do-da.)

I'm pretty sure that the local airfield most commonly used by WDW visitors who fly their own aircraft is Kissimmee Gateway (ISM), http://www.kissimmeeairport.com/fact.htm

I was just wondering. Seems as if there should be some kind of official book or website pilots use.

That was my first thought, too. :)

Heck, you aren't even guarenteed to get to the correct airport flying commercial :rotfl2: http://www.thirdamendment.com/wrongway.html
On June 19, 2004, a Northwest Airlines A319, bound for Rapid City, South Dakota, mistakenly landed at nearby Ellsworth Air Force Base. Although this incident received extensive media coverage, aviators have been landing aircraft at wrong airports since at least Douglas "Wrong Way" Corrigan flew to Ireland instead of California (although his flight is widely regarded to have been an intentional stunt).

Kissimmee would probably be better. Orlando Exec is downtown and quite a drive through the city and down I-4. Plus, I suspect the landing fees at Exec are probably quite high. I don't think Kissimmee has landing fees. But any pilot will know where to look for that type of information.

Thanks everyone. NotUrsula is right -- my cousin had heard there was an airstrip on property but couldn't find any information on it.

From what I've Googled, it seems Kissimmee would be the choice.

Actually, there is a second closed airfield at WDW, in addition to the STOLport. See http://www.airfields-freeman.com/FL/Airfields_FL_OrlandoSW.htm#epcot and http://www.airfields-freeman.com/FL/Airfields_FL_OrlandoSW.htm#disney.

Also, the old STOLport was used to test musical rumble strips - but for buses, long after it had been closed for regular operations. See http://jimhillmedia.com/editor_in_chief1/b/jim_hill/archive/2005/03/08/554.aspx.

I don't find it strange at all. If you are going in a private plane they may never have flown to FL. No different than all drivers don't know how to get everywhere. They need directions or suggestions for the best place to go.
