I can't find a thread that someone posted about using Airport Express to set up wireless in a DVC room. I am going to buy either an iPhone or iPod Touch to use on trips so I don't need to haul a laptop but I will need to set up wi-fi and Airport Express is easy to pack. I am no pro at network setup and am worried about how complicated it will be. I probably won't need to use it anywhere else, so I could configure it just for WDW (although I think Airport Express allows for multiple configurations to be saved). Anyone out there who can advise me?

I was involved in that thread - but I am not a techie. We use the bigger version of the Airport Express at home, so our laptop is all set up for everything already.

We just took the Express with us, plugged it into the outlet, used the Ethernet cable (from the closet) to plug it into the Internet jack and it worked. We didn't have to do anything.

I'm not sure if it would be that simple if you have a different system at home or a laptop that you haven't used with the Express before.

BUT ... if you're just going to use an iPhone or iPod Touch -- I think it should work just as easily -- those devices will just search out the wireless network that you've created and you can join it.

I use an Airport Express at WDW all the time. I did the initial set it up once at home, and now just plug it in when we arrive. I set it up so that it's password-protected (you never know who might be jumping on your wireless, and what they're doing with it.) The setup is simple with the Airport Utility software. When you arrive at WDW, just use the ethernet cable supplied in the DVC room, plug the AExp into the wall near either the router or the outlet for the hi-speed access (usually near the table). That's it!

out of curiosity, those who have used the airport express at home, what kind of range/distance do you see?

Thanks, everyone. I ordered my AX and am going to bring my MacBook this next trip to make sure I get the AX configured correctly. Then I will (hopefully) be good to go when I return in the beginning of Dec. with my iPhone or Touch. I didn't have trouble setting up my Airport Extreme at home but I am always nervous about network setup because I have NO training.

You sound just like me! Computer literate definitely, but network hindered! We always seem to make it work out when doing networking things here at home, but I think 50% of the time it's luck! :lmao:

We use the airport express at home. We have a 2 story 2450 sq ft house.
My DDs have used their laptops anywhere in the house and even in the backyard. The only room that sometimes gets weaker signal is the upstairs bdrm in the front.
