We are trying to get a cruise together for next summer but was wondering if Orlando International is the only option to fly into? We are thinking of flying in the same day we board and wanted the shortest and maybe less expensive way to get there. Any suggestions? thanks

Orlando int. is the only larger airport but there are also some private airstips and the orlando executive airport. If i had to guess i would say your best bet is flying into Orlando int. pirate:

If you are close to an airport that Allegiant Airlines fly out of you could either land Orlando International (MCO) or Orlando Sanford International (SFB). The other airport could be Melbourne, Fla. They don't land very many there, but you might just luck out. I think Allegiant flys out of Toledo and Youngstown, but not really sure.

As stated previously Orlando (MCO) is the largest Airport in the area. The next closest would me Melbourne (MLB).

Continental Airways flies into Daytona Beach Airport but flying into Daytona can be very expensive but that is the closest airport to the port that handles a major airline.

Continental dropped Daytona last year.

Anywho the best airport to fly into is Orlando for the reason of airline choices. Orlando-Sanford is a good alternative if you are not going to the parks and can get easy access to Allegiant Air (the largest carrier outta SFB). Daytona Beach (DAB) is served by Delta and US Airways and isnt too far a drive up 95 from the Port. Melbourne (MLB, not MEL) is served by Delta.

I live in Melbourne and trust me, NOBODY flies in or out of Melbourne. My DH went to DC last week and flew in and out of Orlando.

Very few carriers come to Melbourne and the flights that do come here are usually obscenely expensive. It is 26 miles from MLB to the port and none of them are highway (well, they could be, but you'd be backtracking to do it). Mapquest estimated drive time is 45 minutes. Estimated drive time from MCO to the port is 46 minutes. No kidding.

Thats funny, when I was working the Coke Zero 400 at the track earlier this month I saw at least 4 continental jets fly in and out. Must have been vip's.

USAirways just started service from CLT to MLB. 3 flights a day, each direction. Since CLT is a USairways connection hub, it's now pretty easy to get to from anywhere that USAir flies.

MCO - would be the best option, almost all domestic carriers are there. Plus you have the opportunity to jump on DME to the port.

DAB - is served by AA (starting Dec 1), DL and US

MLB - DL and US

Oh, when I said "NOBODY flies in or out of Melbourne" I didn't mean airlines! I meant people! Even we locals don't use MLB. Yes, there are a few airlines with limited flights, and usually a connection or two. But the locals don't even use the airport.

DME doesn't go to the Port, only WDW.

Ahh -- gotcha. Maybe US is trying to pump its new route, but there are actually some decent fares with them opening that CLT-MLB route.

Please don't fly in the day of your cruise. It is SO dangerous. It would be so easy for you to be left behind. Particularly in summer, with all the thunderstorms that can delay flights for hours/days.

I live in Melbourne, and fly out of MLB every chance I get! I have flown Delta out of MLB twice in the past two months (for business).... I have flown a lot from MCO too, and I prefer MLB for its super convenience (I live only 3 miles from MLB). People in Melbourne, who diss MLB, tend to "conveniently forget" that the drive to MCO takes about an hour (each way) and that parking at MCO costs twice as much ($9/day versus $17/day). On the other hand, flights out of MLB cost generally 20-30% MORE than similar flights out of MCO... so Melbourne residents who have to pay for flights with their own money usually choose MCO and "save money" by driving an extra 2 hours. In other words, the flights from MLB are probably 80-90% business travelers (from Harris, Raytheon, and Northrop-Grumman, etc), where the companies are paying the bill.

Anyway.. back to the topic of the thread... MLB is geographically closer to the port than MCO... but MCO has the "Beach Line" expressway (Toll Road 528) directly to the port. A drive from MCO to the port is only about 30 minutes; the drive from MLB to the port is over 45 minutes. To get to a cruise, there is no advantage to flying into MLB, unless you stumble across a really super great airline fare.
