I'm flying with Virgin in September and always previously done completely direct with them, this time my flight going is direct but coming home is via New York but booked all through with Virgin, do I check in for the MCO-JFK part at the Delta desk or Virgin, guessing Virgin at its booked with them and I'm sure cases go straight through to London

You would need to check in at the Delta desks at MCO as you will be on a Delta plane from MCO to JFK.

Your cases will be checked straight through but you check in at the airline you are flying on :goodvibes

I'm so glad you asked this question as I would have thought exactly the same as you and would have tried checkin at the Virgin desk...

The rule of thumb is to check in with the airline that's operating the first leg of your flight.

If it's a delta plane, check in with delta.

We are also doing MCO-JFK on our first leg home in August, with the first leg AA. As this is an internal flight does anyone know we still have to be at the airport 2-3 hours before??

I would absolutely make sure I was there 2-3 hours before. With traffic, security etc. you never know. We have had smooth transactions at MCO and also ones which were painfully slow. Not worth the risk for another half an hour at the pool IMO.

I never get to the airport 3 hours before, I don't think its needed. We always check in online and get there about 1.5 hours, 2 at the max before our flights

As there is 11 of us we made a group booking with BA, so no online check-in for us I'm afraid. This will be the first time we have had to check in at the airport

Sound advice.

The last two times we flew through MCO the security line was enormously long!

That said, I'm taking my chances tomorrow night and arriving 90 minutes before my international flight. I have no hand luggage or checked bags so hoping I will be OK with my little messenger bag and OLCI.

Without having to check in any luggage I am sure you will be fine. Just head straight through security and straight on the plane!

We usually aim for 2 to 2 1/2 hours but only so we can eat in the food court before our flight!

If you have to check bags, there is a cut-off time. If you arrive too late (traffic jam, breakdown, whatever) you're not allowed to check bags
there is another cut-off time after which you're not allowed to board the plane at all

it sometimes ranges from 45 to 90 minutes, depending on destination, airlines and airports.

That's not a chance I'm willing to take.

Time needed at the airport is impredictable. But there is one thing, derived from Murphy's law :
If you're there early, it will move fast and you'll have too much time to kill at your gate and you'll swear that next time you'll sleep in a bit more ...
But, if you're there later, all lines will be frozen to a stand still for ages, and you'll barely make it for your flight

(you know, it's like the line at the check out in your local supermarket. The next line moves faster than yours ... until you change lines, and that's when that line's register suddendly stops working, or each customer pays with 1p coins)

at the end of the day, it's always best to sit for 1 hour at the gate because you came in too early, than sit for 24 hours at the gate because you missed your flight

2.5 hours is my bare minimum before a flight with an international connection
A last burger at the food court is also a family tradition for us (usually it's a wendy's airside, but this year will fly out of the other terminal ... well, we'll make do :p )

For British airlines it is usually either 60 or 90 minutes before to check in bags and gates close for boarding at 20 minutes before departure. With BA out of LGW check in closes 45 minutes before the flight!

Thanks, yes it was more than enough time, and just like you said: boarding closed 20 minutes prior to departure and it was a walk through security and still had time to kill. I never want to travel with luggage again :D
