Airport Car Rental?

Our flight doesn't leave until 4PM after our cruise. We were thinking about renting a car at the airport since we purchased transferes to the airport from the port. Has anyone done this? Does it take long to pick the car up? How about when you return it? We want to go to Downtown Disney instead of hanging around the airport. We will have a 5 year old and an 8 month old with us. I don't think waiting around an airport is going to be too pleasant with them but I don't know if that is enough time to leave and do something else. Any ideas?

Why don't you only purchase one-way transfers and rent a car at the port for the return to the airport.

Let me explain....You can purchase one-way transfers with DCL from the airport to the port on the day you sail. Just call DCL to get price. When you disembark after the cruise you can catch a shuttle to the Radisson/Avis location and pick up a one-way rental car. You then drive away and do whatever you want in the Disney area or elsewhere until you have to turn your car in at the airport to catch your flight. We have done this and it works out great. You have a place for your luggage (the car) while you are sightseeing. If you have a 4pm flight you should plan on returning the car about 1:30 or 2 pm to allow enough time for check-in.

Check out www.mousesavers.com for Avis codes (under ground transportation or rental cars) to use on www.Avis.com. We used the GROUP CODE FOR AVIS from Mousesavers and only paid $57 dollars for a mini-van for the day we disembarked. Much cheaper than any other transportation option.

Hope this helps a bit.

I agree with mmouse37.

If you cancel your DCL transfers from the ship to the airport, you'll save much more than the cost of the rental car. It's very easy to get the shuttle from the port to the Avis location and there's no one-way drop off fee if you return it to the Orlando Airport location.

It is about 45 mins from Port Canaveral to the airport and another 15 or 20 to get to Downtown Disney, and it's a nice drive.

This would be an easy adventure and you'd even save money, unless you buy lots of things at the Downtown Disney shops.

One thing I want to remind you about though is child seats. If you decide to rent them from Avis ($5/day), I would suggest calling that Avis office directly and make sure they know which type and how many you need. We had advanced ressies that included 2 booster seats last Sept. When we got to the office there were only 3 booster seats left-and 2 were reserved for us!
