Airplane carry on space a nightmare now?

I am one of those whose whole family flies but only checks one bag and brings everything else one. The only bag we check has toiletries in it, if I could bring it on I would. I don't like having to deal with checked luggage. Everything I need fits in my carry on, so why check it. I bring my roll on and my kids bring backpacks and it all fits nicely. Their bags in front of them and my bag above. I am flying SW next month and don't plan on checking bags on the way down but will have to check my souvie bag on the way home since a bat won't fit under the seat. I don't see the big deal in bringing everything you need on wiht you if it fits nicely but I agree about the big bags.

I've always wondered why?
If you have to wait for one bag...why not check them all?
You dont need any of those items during flight so why lug them across a crowded airport?

my oldest dd (a teen) just flew alone for the first time in her life, to see her Grandma. She had to change planes, etc...do EVERYTHING alone. I thought it would be much, much easier for her to not have to worry about checking luggage, and finding her bag later on the baggage carousel. So I bought her a new duffle bag, that would fit regulations for carry on. I made her take NO liquids (she can use grandma's shampoo for 10 days), etc.

She did pretty well till she made her connecting flight. She was boarded about halfway through. They had to take her bag and check it, there was already no bin space.

Luckily, since it wasn't oversized at all, they didn't charge her.

So apparently, it's become an issue (or more of one than it used to be). She flew Frontier, btw.

:

I've seen a few times now people saying they are going to cram everything into the carry-ons and maybe check one bag per family if that.

I fly a lot. If you board a full flight and you have a roll a board (small suitcase that qualifies as a carry-on, with wheels), board as soon as you are allowed. Most planes run out of room for roll a boards before the last person boards.

I check my bags and pay the fee...

Wow, I can't believe anyone could back a carry-on for a whole family. I can barely pack my own stuff in a carry-on. I'm with you, DisneyBamaFan, I just pay the $15 and check my big bag (if I'm flying with family--then i have at least one other person's stuff in there.)

On a recent flight on a small plane, we had to gate check our carryons (like a stroller), and we given our luggage back when we departed.

I'm another person who flies with carry-on only. It has nothing to do with checked bag fees; I did this before the change in policy on those fees. I fly often enough and I'm not interested in being in another city for a meeting without clothes because an airline misplaced my luggage during my connection somewhere. My carry-on is within the regulation size and I'm fine if it is gate checked as opposed to going in an overhead compartment; I also carry my laptop bag with everything I want with me on the plane and it fits under my seat.

How about those considerate folks in row 25 that stow their bags above row 8 and then go to their seat.?

When my husband and I flew to Hawaii we were in first class (thanks airline miles!). We were able to board first and we just sat back and watched the show. DH had the aisle seat and got hit by nearly every person that walked by! People would not only carry on bags that were clearly larger than what was allowed, but they also had huge backpacks on their backs that would swing around and hit everyone in their path!

Not only that but people would walk on the plane and immediately put their stuff in the first class overhead compartments so they wouldn't have to drag or carry it to the back of the plane. It didn't bother me too much since our stuff was already up there, but there were plenty of people having a fit because they had stuff they still wanted to store up there.

Also, on both flights to and from Maui the plane was delayed because they had to take some carry on's off the plane and check them because they just ran out of room for them.

On a side note, what cracked me up was that we had those seats that recline down into a bed. Behind the seats were a really nice down pillow and blanket for us to use. Someone in coach grabbed my husband's pillow and blanket when he walked by and took it with him back to his seat! :rotfl2:

Needless to say, DH was NOT happy!

Agreed. It's all about how one packs. We've gone to Europe,in winter, for 8 days with a compliant rollaboard and under-seat backpack each. A trip to Disney is cake compared to this.

I don't want to wait for my bag, and I surely don't want it lost. As airline (AA) elites, we wouldn't even have to pay to check up to 2 bags each, and I still won't do it.

Cheers.

I usually fly Southwest, so no bag fees or problems with overhead. Still, the whole charging for bags concept isn't really a viable solution to anything.:confused3

Sure it is. It's a way for the very troubled airline industry to generate some revenue from the infrequent flier.

Cheers.

Agreed, and I read recently that it was greatly improving their revenue stream...

AirTran charges $15 for the first bag, and $25 for the 2nd bag.
When we go to WDW, I see parents that make their kids carry their own packback, so loaded down they are tipping backwards, plus they are pulling a small luggage on wheels behind them. Some families have the system pretty well down pat.
AirTran allows you one personnel item, ie., purse, backpack, laptop and one carry-one.
For my trip Sat. I am checking one very large bag, I hope I can keep it under 50 lbs, a carry-on, and I am using a backpack for our trip, not a purse. I never have a problem with finding room with AirTran, but I probably just jinxed myself.

LOL - sounds like my family! :rotfl2: You should've seen me trying to get 5 kids, and a bunch of carry ons, through security, by myself (DH was in long term parking). Before these fees, we'd check EVERYTHING except a small backpack - I hate having "stuff" (don't even own a purse, just a wristlet).

My pet peeve with carry on space is that people should be using the space above the section they are sitting in. I flew to Texas last year and was sitting towards the front of the plane. By the time we were allowed to board, everyone from the back of the plane had used the overhead bins in the front so that it was easy for them to grab on their way off. Great for them, but there was no room left for those of us up front. I only carry-on a small backpack, but couldn't find space even for that.

I usually fly JetBle, they let you check one bag for free. I just carry-on my backpack, which fits under the seat. So people can use my space. Since I usually sit in the aisle seat, I do get hit by some people's bags.

My carry on is always too big for the overhead, so I gate check it each time. It's free and you get your bag on the jetway, no waiting around the baggage claim area.

I especially love it when someone can't fit everything above them, so they try to put a laptop, purse, etc. UNDER their seat and in my foot space...then get all indignant when they're told (usually by Flight Attendant) that it has to be in THEIR foot space..

How do they even get it under there? There's a bar under there....weird.

I am a diabetic and fly pretty often. In my carry on I keep all my supplies (I wear a pump so it is my infusion sets, insulin, extra food etc.) My carryon is well within the size allowed. It is the only bag I had-no purse, no computer etc. Twice in the past few months I have been made to gate check it as they said there were "too many carry ons" boarded ahead of me. I was VERY clear with the gate people that these were my medical supplies. That meant I had to unpack and carry on my wallet, food, insulin, glucometer, etc. Thank heavens I had a large ziplock! This was not a rolling type case, it was a softsided Vera Bradley that would of easily slid under the seat ahead of me. The flight attendants on both flights asked my why I was carrying a large ziplock of supplies and I explained. Both told me that the gate people were wrong but what could I do? I sure did not want to hold up boarding wheile they called a supervisor! I fly out of the same airport all the time and last year watched them UNLOAD all the gate checked items onto the tarmac and leave without them because of weight/fuel issues. People were just dumbfounded and shocked as we pulled away and all the strollers etc. were just left there!!!!! Good luck.............

Yeah, I'd be waiting for a supervisor. That's not OK. Especially if your'e putting it under your seat.

That's nothing new at all.

AirTran allows you one personnel item, ie., purse, backpack, laptop and one carry-one.

As far as I know, they all have that allowance (assuming a "normal" airline, not a puddle-jumper type).

My carry on is always too big for the overhead, so I gate check it each time. It's free and you get your bag on the jetway, no waiting around the baggage claim area.

Are you sure it's truly carry-on sized? FYI I've heard announcements that they WOULD charge for something checked at the gate (was on Virgin America at the time). You have been lucky but I wouldn't count on that.

Once we don't have to cart a carseat and stroller around (carseat isn't for the flight anymore, but if we will be in a car or shuttlevan) to gatecheck, we'll go back to carry-on only. We totally COULD do carry-on only, even with the items to be gate-checked, but it's just too difficult and full of hassles. Especially since not all airports allow luggage carts through security (seatac does, san diego doesn't, for instance).

All of our luggage was bought from the Rick Steves travel store, and all of his luggage works with even international carryon sizes. His tours REQUIRE that the participants ONLY use carryons, and participants have to be able to carry their luggage. His bigger bags (still carryon size) have backpack straps that tuck and lock in, so you have two handles to choose from, plus the straps if you are walking a ways. SO convenient. And those are all we use. Generally we do check them for now, but again, once those gate checked items aren't needed (or once we get a carseat to keep at my brother's place), we'll do it again.

And honestly, we bring two items on board anyway (it would remain two things once we're bringing the bigger bags on)...generally the Rick Steves Avanti travel bag and a purse or backpack with camera, or a computer bag...really depends on who is carrying what.

We've never had a problem fitting things in, even while we watch other struggling. And watching people struggling with the weight or size of their bags just kinda cracks us up (though we're not normally ones who enjoy the problems of others), b/c they obviously didn't think about what all they were packing. For instance, the co-workers who got to run across a Chicago airport with me and two other co-workers, carrying her bag that was stuffed with ALL of her CDs....that thing was HEAVY, but none of us (not even the guy with us) helped her...we TOLD her she didn't need to bring them all (nor did she need to bring each case!)...

We no longer take large carry-ons that we have to worry about finding bin space for. The last time I did that I was with my mother and had to try and find space for both of them. It was nervewracking. And I hate getting to my seat and finding the overhead bin is already full of stuff from people who are sitting further back. They should only be allowed to use bin space above their own heads, unless everyone is onboard and there is still space leftover.

The last flight I took we only had tote bags for our carry-ons and they fit quite nicely under the seats. That's all I will take from now on.

we just flew back from las vegas, and saw LOTS of folk stuffing their carryons into bins in the front rows, when they were sitting way in the back of the plane

what we do is book seats in the last 5-10 rows when we get our tix, so we're among the first onboard (after first class, children and those needing extra time) - that way, we always have room for our carryons
