When is a good time to purchase airline tickets? We are going on a 7-day Western on 9/13/2003 :Pinkbounc I don't want to buy now if they will go on sale in a month or two but don't want to miss out if they are at their lowest now ($195 round trip from Pittsburgh). Any insight would be appreciated.

To me anything from the Northeast to Florida under $200 is a good deal.

We usually pay from $195 to $211 for our flights to Orlando out of Newark....

But...on Delta I found R/T from JFK to Orlando on 5/17 for only $135!!! I grabbed it immediately....heck, even if I didn't book the cruise I would have gone to Florida anyway at that price!!!! It would cost more in gas to drive!!!

I'd buy now. If things do start in the Middle East, OPEC will raise the price on a barrel of oil and the the airlines (and all gas stations in the US) will use that as a reason to immediately hike prices! I doubt we'll see a big sale anytime soon! (But I hope I'm wrong!).......

The flip side of that is if people stop travelling because of war worries then the airlines may drop fares to lure them back....it's hit or miss. I would buy at $195...it is a good deal and this way you will be sure you have your flight. Some airline are already changing their rebooking policies to make them more easy for people to change their flights....(heard this on the news...not sure which airlines). The airlines are still hurting from 9/11....they certainly would not want to alienate travellers by jacking up prices unless they really had to due to oil price increases.
