Airline rescheduling for Hurricanes

Can anyone tell me what Continental and Delta did to accomodate customers flying to / from Orlando right after the latest hurricanes? I believe they did not charge a fee to reschedule, but did passengers get to rebook at the same fare or did they have to pay the difference if the new flight was a higher fare?

I am supposed to fly to Orlando next Thursday. on Continental and home on Sept 20 on Delta. With Ivan coming, that may not happen if the hurricane goes right over Florida. I am trying to figure out whether it will make sense to reschedule or whether I will just have to writeoff the amount I paid. The fare was under $100 each way and that is why I decided to go. On the alternate dates I am looking at, the fare is over $200 each way. I'm not sure I want to pay the difference, but if I can reschedule at the same fare I will certainly go at a later date if I can get off from work.

The airlines normally allow you to rescheule within a selected time period at no charge. However, it will probably be a day or so before they start making decisions known.

However, based on current preditions Ivan should be gone by the time of your flight. I would just hang tight for a few days.

The rules vary from one airline to another and from one storm to another. Some airlines require that your replacment flights be completed within a certain short time frame.

If they won't switch you to flights of your liking including time of day (if not sold out) with no more dollars to pay, just ask for a full refund.

Continental's website said that for certain travel periods (at the time I looked it was through 9/14/04 and didn't include MCO) they will waive the change fee, but you must complete your new travel by November 14, 2004. So, actually that doesn't help too much if you have to reschedule, but can't leave before then.
