ok if I purposely want to miss my flight back home so I can fly back on the same flight as the rest of my group, do you think the airline will put me on the same flight (providing there are seats available)? We are all flying into the same airport, just my flight was an earlier one but I want to spend the day with the group.

Each airline has its own Contract of Carriage with its passengers, so there's no way to know unless you identify your airline and what type of ticket you have.

In general, I'd expect you'd an minimum have to pay whatever their "change" fee is. You might also have to pay any difference, if any, between the price of your flight and the price of that flight (for the same type of ticket).

I would be very careful doing this I have read lately that airlines are not honoring your ticket if you miss your flight and you are stuck buying a new ticket or not flying,or if they are in a good mood they will give you the credit toward the next flight and you would pay the change fee. I would do some searching but I know I read it somewhere on line recently. Try the New York Times or Wall Street Journal.

Move-Up Program

The new US Airways* understands that travelers need flexibility in their schedule. That's why we allow you to "move up" to any earlier flight on the same day of your originally scheduled departure time at the airport (with the exception of flights to Hawaii and Europe). Please note: Day-of-departure changes may only be made at the airport and not through our Reservations centers.

If there is an open seat available on any earlier flight that departs on the same day as your originally scheduled departure, you may change to that flight and we will automatically confirm your reservation for $25 for flights within the 48 contiguous United States and $50 for flights to Latin America, the Caribbean, Canada and Alaska. This lower confirmation fee replaces the usual $100 change fee, plus any differences between your old fare and new fare, for non-refundable tickets.

If there is NOT an open seat available on an earlier flight that departs on the same day as your originally scheduled departure, you may stand by for that flight at no charge. Standing by at no charge is not permitted if we can confirm that there is an open seat available for that flight. Seats on completely booked flights may become available if passengers with confirmed reservations don't show up for the flight. Please note: Unlike a confirmed reservation, flying standby does not guarantee that you will get on the particular flight that you want and may involve waiting for two or more flights before a seat is available to you.

if i'm understanding this correctly, if you want to fly on a flight AFTER yours, they may charge you a $100 change fee. they only appear to allow flying standby at no penalty for earlier flights (and that's assuming they have no seat to sell you for $25).

you may want to confirm with them though, 800-428-4322

This would not be a wise thing to do. Missing your flight will void your ticket. Is flying on the same plane as your friends really so important? If so, I would simply pay the change ticket fee and try and change to the later flight now.

Exactly.

Because if I understand it correctly, not only will you be responsible for the change fee, you'll have to pay any difference in price between the flights. If you wait until the day of your friends' flight to fly, that price is probably going to be pretty expensive.

HAve you thought about the chance that there might not be a seat available. You may just want to call to see if you can switch your ticket instead of missing your flight.

If you arrive at the airport and check in within 30 minutes of the departure time most airlines will take pity on you and put you on standby on the next flight at no charge...but if you are more than 30 minutes late checking in all bets are off....and BTW, US Air isn't known to be overly benevolent in such matters....they are much more rigid about adhering to their rules than many airlines tend to be.

So if you have to get to the airport almost on time anyways you won't be able to spend the day with your friends...so you might either hunker up for the change fee or go home as scheduled. Sorry.

ITA! Just change it now so you can enjoy your last day with your friends rather than spending it at the airport!
