I haven't been on a plane since 1998,and things certainly have changed by then. I am confused about what the rules are about bringing on shampoo and conditioner, sun lotion, mouthwash, bath gel, ect. I thought you could pack that sort of stuff in your regular luggage, but only bring liquids in your carry on if they are in 3 oz bottles and a clear platic bag? Now I am told by a friend that we can only bring the 3 oz bottles of liquid and that they have to be checked in,and are not allowed to be with our carry on luggage. I checked the websites of the airlines we are using, but they weren"t really clear to me. Does anyone know if you can bring whole bottles of shampoo and condtioner, ect in your checked in luggage? We are using US Airways & United Airlines. Please help!!! And thank you so much!

You can bring as many 3 ounce or smaller containers of liquids that fit in a quart sized ziplock bag in your carry-on. I actually store mine in just a sandwich sized ziploc myself.

You can carry however much liquid you want .... full sized stuff to your hearts content, water bottles etc. in your checked luggage. :thumbsup2

Either your friend was incorrect or he/she relayed it in a confusing manner.

The rule for carry-on is: 3-1-1 (3 oz. bottles; in a 1 qt. clear plastic ziploc bag; 1 bag per passenger). You can put all the liquids you want in your checked luggage. Here's a link to the TSA website that describes it in more detail: http://www.tsa.gov/311/index.shtm

Not sure if US Air and United have an overage fee. Just be careful of the checked baggage weight. Sometimes those liquids can add up very quickly and you can go over the weight limit. I do know with Continental that if you go over 50 lbs there is an additional charge besides the regular fee. This is the reason why we ship all of that stuff down via UPS. Don't have to worry about what to put in my carry on or checked baggage.

50 lbs is a lot of 'stuff'....I know my bag was really heavy but it only came in at 40 lbs last Friday!!!
This is a good way to think of what goes in that clear qt sized baggie (in 3 oz bottles)..if it doesn't hold it's shape when removed from it's container, it is a liquid or gel and needs to be in that 3 oz container.
I usually put a travel sized toothpaste, deod., sunscreen, Purell, lipgloss in my baggie. That way...I have what I will need just in case there is a luggage issue at my destination. I can at least brush my teeth and deoderize myself, slap some sunscreen on and head out.

I don't usually carry more than a smallish shampoo and conditioner bottle in my checked bag. Add some sunscreen, toothpaste (full size) and that's about it for liquids. They add a pound or two, if that. Be sure to put them in ziploc baggies in your checked luggage though. I had a conditioner bottle open up in my bag and it wasn't a pretty sight when I opened that bag...everything had to be washed!!

I do agree that 50 lbs is a lot but normally our suitcases are close to or over that. So this is the reason why I ship all the toiletries and things of this nature down. I do bring my travel size tooth paste, deodorant and sunscreen with me in my pocket book as well. But outside of that, it goes in the shipping box. Unfortunately, everyone in our family uses different stuff so we have a lot of toiletries. I have tried for many years to condense it with no luck. I do agree about the ziploc bags in the checked luggage. I had a shampoo bottle open on me as well and boy what a mess.
