Well... looks like my daughter and I will need to make 6 flights within the next year. How is the SouthWest credit card? Can you earn free trips? I have a CC for Delta but Delta you only get upgrades and their flights are expensive.

Can it be joint with DH and I. I think we would get a lower apr with it joint. Just seeking opinions before I purchase. Last year we took only two flights, both SouthWest, year before flew Delta...

I LOVE my Southwest card!! I got it last year with the 50,000 miles bonus so I've been able to take lots of flights to Disneyland for FREE. It's great because I hate driving and much rather prefer to fly. We use the card for practically all our household expenses so we are good at racking up more points. You also get 6,000 points each year on your anniversary. There is a $99 annual fee (this if for the premier card), but we feel that we more than make our money back with what we've saved on flights.

southwest is a spectacular card- be sure to apply for the 50000 point bonus deal

Yes, love the southwest card. If you can get both cards on the 50k promotion, you are so close to a companion pass. We did this and have a free person on all flights through the end of 2016. We also got two free flights with Delta this year with points, so you might check on those again.

Do you mean my husband get a card and I get a card? I was thinking a joint card?

Can you share points? If so, I was looking for a credit card for my adult son to get his credit started. I would probably have to co-sign.

You can get a card. Your DH can have his own accout. It's worth trying for your son. There is a $69 annual fee but it's worth it for the 50K points to start and your annual bonus points. If you do internet shopping, plan on shopping through the SW Rapid Rewards portal for extra points. They add up quickly.

The only way to get a Companion pass is if one person applies for 2 SWA CC ( the plus and premier) when they offer the 50K point cards. Spend $2K in 90 on each card. Then charge enough to get 6K in points to get to 110K points for the pass. You are better off doing this either in Dec or Jan. You more than likely will hit the 110K at the beginning of the year and the Companion pass will be good for 2016 & 2017. I earned mind in Feb of this year and love it. We have taken 6 trips with the pass! Love being able to book and cancel and have everything refunded.

Yes you can add your husband to both cards.

Don't forget most car insurance companies allow you to pay for your insurance using a credit card and that would be a big chunk of the spending needed to reach 110. Now is a good time to stock your pantry for winter or start Xmas shopping.

*That's not the ONLY way to get a companion pass...that's just the easiest way....^ to get a CP you need to hit 110k in points within a year- you can do that as noted above thru 2 bonuses in ONE persons name(and 2 cc's) or by flying(and paying) or by spending that much on your cc to get those points (esp. look at the shopping portal for extra points)....or a combo of the above.*
To the OP original question..... be CAREFUL. If you are concerned about APR on a cc, then you are paying interest. If you are carrying a balance and paying interest, the value of that SWA cc is GREATLY diminished.Rule of thumb is pay the balance off IN FULL each month, avoid charges, and use the card to gain points to fly. It's way too easy to get into trouble with this cc,just like any cc unless you can do this. ANd nont get 2 cc's in one persons name, and carry a balance! That is not a good choice. This method only works well if you can do the above, without worrying about the APR,since you pay it off each month.

Also OP....it sounds like this is all new to you..... If you are able to PIF each month, then I recommend the card, an you can add your husband and son as authorized users to that one account.

I just got my SW card in July and I LOVE it. We fly SW regularly so it was a no brainer for us. We are already planning to use the extra 50,000 miles for flights for our honeymoon. I have been putting regular expenses like groceries, car insurance, etc. on it and just paying it off as I go.
