Airline Carry-ons: can I get away with a 47" (linear) bag?

I'm trying to weigh all my options for Carryon luggage for my disney trip. I have the perfect duffel but it is 47" linear inches. Can I get away with this or would I have to buy a new bag? What has been your experience?

Also, can anyone suggest some carry-ons? 45 linear inches?

If it will not fit in the overhead you cannot carry it on. 45 inches is the max width of that compartment. If it is a duffel and you don't pack it full you might get in to squish in, if you do not get checked before. When we check in at our airport there a box the sixe of the compartment and you have to be able to just sit you bag in and have it fit.

Unless things have changed, the max size of each individual's carry on is 22 linear inches. The compartment may be 47 or 48 inches, but ONE PERSON cannot take up the entire compartment. Check with your airline website for rules regarding carryon size. 47" is nearly four feet! That seems majorly excessive for one person to be allowed to bring on.

Why not just check it?

Or, buy a standard 22" sized carryon suitcase.

We just flew Delta and on all four of our flights they were super strict and cranky about the carry on rules. Also if you are on a flight that has the TV's in the back of the chairs - those chairs fit lower to the ground and most carry on's and pilots will not fit under them. We had a small children's pilot and laptop backpack and neither of them fit. My purse only fit if I laid it on it's side. Because of this the overhead bins fill up really fast with personal items as well as carry on's. Space was a huge issue on all four flights.

Oh, I was confused. I thought linear inches meant LENGTH. :lmao:
That's ok! :lmao:

I'm soooo stupid I could kick myself! I just ordered two large duffels off Vera Bradley website. I was thinking that those are the perfect carry-ons. Then I realized that if they are both filled they could be extremely hard to carry. Now I have to send them back to the company. I need something with wheels. Ahhh! can anyone recommend a bag??

What are you guys putting in your carryons that you need such a large bag? Or are you trying to get around the luggage fees?!?!

Be warned...if your bag doesn't fit- you'll be made to check it (and pay for it) right then and there at the gate. Every airline posts their carryon allowances on their websites. Check them carefully. Nothing is worse than having your flight delayed because 5 people tried sneaking "too big" luggage on the flight :headache:

Well if you don't pack it full, duffels do squish.

ricksteves.com has a travel store where everything he sells fits the carryon requirements for most airlines (though not Air New Zealand or Qantas, if memory serves). And he has some wheeled luggage...the BIG problem with *needing* it to have wheels because you are going to pack it too full to carry easily is that you are going ot have to lift those bags up above your head, and then, even harder, take them down without losing control of them. So I would highly recommend, even if you get things with wheels, to not pack them so heavily that you cannot easily put them above your head and then take them down, maneuvering around breakable things (to mimic peoples' heads) bringing it safely to the ground.

Hit Marshalls or Kohls, great bags, always on "sale"..get one with Wheels!!!

PET PEEVE ALERT!

I hate it when people carry on HUGE bags. I have had trips where I couldn't even get my coat in the overhead because people have carried on such large bags. Either pony up the money to check your luggage or pack lighter!

I just got 3 of the above hardsided rolling carry-ons for $105 Total (I had an additional coupon code)

We haven't gone on our trip yet but we like them. We intend to pack two days outfits per person in each one and then divide up the miscellaneous stuff among them. And just purchase full-size toiletries when we get to our destination.

The passengers don't set the carry-on sizes. The airlines do. Blame the airlines.

Thanks Marlynn!

And the following bag is 9x22x14. Packing length is 21", but 22" includes the wheels.

That's not the one we have; we don't have rolling bags (though hubby wants one for business trips), but ours are about the same size, and they are all we have!

While I understand it is the airlines that set the rules, we all need to be considerate of our fellow travellers, if you need a big bag, then check it! It drives me bonkers when we are sitting on a plane and have to wait for the last 10 people to have their luggage checked because everything is full.

Oh I absolutely agree! All the airlines have guidelines, most just don't enforce them, therefore people try, and do, get away with carrying on larger and larger bags. Delta is the only airline I've seen actually enforce measuring bags and making people check them if they are too large. It's just a personal annoyance because the last time I flew I couldn't even fit my coat into the overhead!

I asked a question similar on the transportation board one time and got major flamed!

What I don't get is how all the luggage in dept. stores say carry on, but they are too big when you include the handle and wheels. You would think they would change that.

My MIL flies a couple of times a year, and always brings a bag that is over the limit. She has never been told she can't carry it on. She will aslo be the one bringing a oversize carryon, plus a large personal item, plus a plastic shopping bag of stuff she bought in the airport. No one ever stops her. :confused3

I'm the one measuring and weighing everything 10 times before to make sure I don't go over, and no one ever checks. I will bring the biggest carry on the airline allows, yet there are always people with larger luggage than me. It seems like they could solve the problem by allowing everyone a free checked item, and charging for carryons!
