We've found another flight on the same morning but it's with a different airline. Does anyone have any experience using a different airline to and from their destination? We'd like to keep our return flight, because it leaves in the evening and new airline leaves super early in the morning on our last day.

Is using two different airlines a huge pain??

I've flown two airlines a bunch of times. It's no big deal. Just make sure you keep it straight who you are flying where and any luggage limitations you may have

Your tickets will be two one way tickets. Sometimes airport security flags these and you may be selected for extra checks including carry on bags. I would allow yourself extra time at the airport just in case.

it's fine.lots of people do it all the time..... keep your preferred flights

This is just not true. How do you think the TSA would know if you have a round trip or a one way ticket? They only see your boarding pass for one way. It does make a difference for international flights, but not domestic.

Just curious, which airline was it?

I always book one way tickets, never had a problem with security.

Did they cancel a flight you already had booked or a flight you were going to book?

I have done it for business to get preferred pricing. The only problem it caused for me was that on the way home, I flew into a different terminal than I flew out of. So my car was in the wrong parking garage and I had to walk a long way with my bags. It wasn't fun when I just wanted to go home. So if you are driving or having someone pick you up be sure that you check ahead where you come in. I totally should have realized it too because Boston Logan has the terminals split by airlines.. d'oh!

Some airlines won't refund the outgoing flight and also let you keep the return flight of a round trip, although they might make an exception "just for you" if you escalate the question to higher up.

But you will need to complete that possibly time consuming maneuver, escalation and all, prior to booking the replacement outgoing flight with a different airline.

Logan Airport (BOS) has a shuttle bus that goes among the various terminals, and I think most other airports do to0. (MCO does not between Side A and Side B).

I don't think this is true anymore. For a few years after 9/11, yes, one way tickets were often flagged for extra security checks, but I don't think it's been the case for years now. I often fly using one way tickets and have never been selected for extra screening. Those extra checks are more a random thing now, not based on what type of ticket you have.

OP, the airline has to refund your fare for a cancelled flight if you insist. However, they MIGHT also cancel your return reservation and you'd have to rebook it as a one way flight at possibly a higher price.
