Airfares are outrageous!

What is up with airfares lately? We are planning a trip for either during the kids' Christmas break or in Jan-Feb. (Depends on if/when our DVC contract passes ROFR). We'll have some points that need to be used up and we would prefer to go during the kids Christmas break, as it will be easier to get away and not have to worry about their sports schedules. I realize and appreciate that airfares are higher during peak travel times (like Christmas), but they are really so much higher than normal, it is crazy. Even airfares during January and February are astronomical. Would love to hear if you all have tips on getting the lowest airfares available or if you just don't deal with it anymore and drive. We have driven several times (Austin-Orlando), but due to the shortened trip, would prefer to maximize our time by flying. About 3 years ago I got round trip AUS-MCO airfares for $179, which was low even then. I guess those days are long gone.

It's why we go Tues/Wed to Tues/Wed now. The prices are much cheaper on those days.

We are going RT from MSP for cheap over spring break. $108/$112 a leg.

Wow! That is crazy cheap! Congrats on scoring such a great fare! You give me hope! :)

We put in a kayak alert last Monday for Boston to Austin rd trip Thanksgiving week. The prices have gone UP everyday the past week to well over $2,000 for 2 people coach! That is traveling ON the holiday.

Last year, we booked jetblue for Sat after Thanksgiving and the price came down to less than half of what we paid (got a credit) so kind of hoping we might snag some last minute tickets this year too.

Good luck OP!

It's likely you missed some good deals months ago by waiting so long to buy tickets for December travel. It's not likely prices will go down for that time period. However, I wouldn't be surprised if prices drop for February travel.

I read yesterday that Southwest and American will be having a fare war out of Dallas since the Wright Amendment is now over. How far is Dallas?

Also take into consideration that DVC resorts are mostly booked for Christmas break at this point. You may be able to piece together a few nights here and there, but nothing for more than a few days and that will most likely be SSR.

Booking airfare for Christmas is going to be a higher price than usual. And as PP state DVC availability will be hard to come by this late in the game for a Christmas stay.
