Like most (if not all) of us, I am always looking for the best deals on airfare. We have a trip planned for September and due to some unforeseen expenses, a portion of the "airfare account" had to be used. I know that we will rebound and that the trip is still 100% going to happen.

My question is: would it be wise to snag the low airfare NOW for the flight down and worry about the leg coming home later when the prices get a little lower and funds are replenished?

My thoughts: I'd rather have scored a low fare on one leg and pay a bit more for the second if it doesn't go down, than get stuck paying a higher fare for the round trip.

Any one have experience, advice, etc?! TIA! :goodvibes

It's been my experience that buying a round trip has always been cheaper then 2 ways separate. I fly out of Detroit and it's dominated by Delta airlines, not many options for competition. Delta always has been cheapest to fly to certain destinations. Everyone's flight options are different though, that's a hard question to answer.

I agree with PP with exseption of Southwest airlines, with SW you pick out and back individually.

Delta sometimes gives a better rate buying round trip, but Southwest, Spirit, and Airtran all price it the same whether you're booking one leg or both. I'm not sure how other airlines work. Like you, we fly out of Detroit and those are the only carriers we've traveled with.

OP, I did that for our May trip. I booked the flight down because it dropped to $89pp but held out a couple weeks long before booking my return fare because it was holding steady and I had other things come up that led me to dip into the vacation fund. I'm glad I did too, because I haven't seen either leg below $100 one way since then. In fact, Airtran is now advertising a sale fare of $131 on the flight I paid $89 for.
