Airfare from NY to LA...any tips?

Anyone have any tips on getting good airfare from NY (NYC area) to LA? We're traveling in August for our first trip to Disneyland and then on to a 7 day Cruise to the Mexican Riviera.

We have never travelled to the West Coast before so if anyone has any tips on when to buy airfare or where to look for good airfare I would SO appreciate it.

I love Jetblue, and fly them to the West coast to Long Beach from JFK . . . however, I saw that Virgin is starting a JFK-LAX route and will have some pretty good deals to get people interested, so you might want to check them. If you aren't picky, you can go to a site like kayak.com and put in your route and it will get you lots of options.

I'm only going one way from JFK-LAX, since I'm meeting my dad out there and we're driving back to NY...but the best fares I found were on Virgin America at $129 for the one-way ticket.

You can sign in as a guest. Orbitz and other sites use them. We did an expedia search and got $600 from Bos to San Diego and out of LA back to Bos.

We did the above site and just got $242 round trip on united flying out of providence.

You don't buy from them. They just give you the flights and then you call the airline with the flight numbers, info, etc.
