airfare credit?

i see alot of people post about airfare credit....forgive me but i have never heard of it > what is it ?
if you book at a certain rate and it drops they will give you money back??
please explain - i am all about saving money if i can

I don't know about other airlines, but SWA will give you credit back to your credit card if your fare drops and you make no change in your schedule and the fare category is the same as you booked.

I just posted this info in a different thread yesterday, but we're flying USAirways to MCO in a few weeks (and bought tix 2 weeks ago) and yesterday I noticed that the fares for my exact flights had dropped $56 per ticket. Since I bought 4 tickets, that's some serious $. USAirways will not drop my price since the tix were nonrefundable. They are issuing me 4 vouchers, each good for $56 off a USAir flight within the next year for the same named passengers. Not as good as a credit to my charge card, but better than nothing.

They told me I had the money as a credit with them only to put toward any other flights in a 12 month period. I wish they had credited me back.

careful, i believe the expiration date of the sw credits is one year from the day you originally bought the tickets. not one year from the time you get the credit.

Major airlines will issue you vouchers if your flights prices go down. They WILL NOT contact you. Its your responsibilty to check the fares. If you notice a price drop contact them and they will issue vouchers good for future travel. The day the vouchers are issued, you have 12 months to use them. You can wait 11 months and book a trip later on down the road. For instance...I purchased airfare last May. Saw that the airfare dropped so I got vouchers in Late June. I just used those vouchers in Feb for a trip in December.

Some at Southwest were not able to get cc credit, just credit for a future flight, even with no changes except the price..and the amount put in your account must be used within one year from when you originally booked (again, this is SW).

thank you everyone. we wont be traveling with SW or US....midwest or NWA in my area.......that have the direct flights. ( we only want direct flights with the kids)

any credit would be better than none......even if it was credited toward flight in my eyes i doubht we will have the situation, but it was a question i was wondering about.

Has anyone ever received a credit from Airtran? They told me they don't give any but I thought I would double check.

I did get credit with Airtran to use towards future flights in the next year. However you pay $50 per person fee because you are basically re-booking the flight. So, it is only works it if the fare went down more than that.

Not always, depends on the agent you speak with.

You are totally correct. And travel has to be completed by that date.

I had purchased non-refundable tickets thru USAir for 8/04...my flights dropped $60.00 per seat.....I called this past Monday and they issued a credit to my credit card...and it has already went thru. Is it all in who you talk to or did I get really lucky??? I actually thought I would only qualify for a credit voucher for which I was happy....but I was thrilled when I got $180.00 back on my charge! Maybe check again??

After reading these board in & out, I am trying to find the most reasonable price to go to Orlando (dates: 81/ thru 8/8 Phl -Orl). I check airline websites regularly and the lowest rates are $79 @ way. I am ready to book. The best time schedule is with Southwest Airlines, but it's 5 of us traveling and we would really like sits together (3 kids over 5 yrs). If I book with SWA now and the rates drop, they will credit my cc if I don't change my scheduled flights? But, what are the chances of us sittting together? If I can get this rate with US Air we'll have assigned seats, but the times are really bad w/their schedule. Airtran won't give credit for price drops and the best times are at higher rates. Southwest is really looking good at this point and as I read more they are a good deal. What to do? Should I just go for SWA and take my chances with sitting? TIA

mep319 -- I think you got incredibly lucky, and good for you. The agent I spoke with could not have been nicer. As we got to talking, it turns out we're neighbors and she only lives about 10 blocks away from me. So it wasn't as if she was unwilling to help. I'm convinced that if she was able to credit me, she would have. Seems like you either bought tickets with slightly different rules, or were fortunate to deal with an agent who didn't mind breaking USAir's rules for you. Either way, congrats. I think it's too late for me to try again, since the vouchers are already in the mail on their way to me. Oh well, like I said, it's better than nothing.
