AIREAL--for Avatarland?

This is what I ask those who have decided that they already dislike Avatarland.

Would you rather have Camp Minnie-Mickey? Remember, that you're still losing Festival of the Lion King when it moves to Africa.

So, you're basically saying that you would rather have another place to meet Donald, Goofy, and Pluto than having a potential 3-5 new attractions for Disney's Animal Kingdom.

believe it or not some people actually would want nothing over avatar..simply mind boggling

Avatarland will only be a flop if they don't do it right. If they have a good budget, it could be fantastic - it really doesn't matter what movie its based on. It could be the worst movie ever made, and the attractions could be fantastic. Or it could be my favorite movie and they could screw it up. It really just depends on how much effort and money they decide to put into it.

If they can take the bean-counters assigned to oversee the Avatar budget as a whole and tell them to just count Joe Rodhe's beans and nobody else's, Avatar will be great.

And for the record, I'm not saying its not cool technology. I'm not saying it doesn't have potential. I'm just saying that no matter what new stuff they throw at Avatarland, it will still be Avatar.

Yeah, Avatar, the highest grossing film ever made. Despite the people who hate it, it was actually extremely popular. They aren't exactly srtiking while the iron is hot, but the the sequels will reignite it.

No one said they'd rather have nothing, they'd rather have something that makes more sense like Australia.

And yes I'm well aware that its the highest grossing film and all that crap. It just goes to prove my point. Avatar at the time represented new technology and filming, people saw it because it was new. The story sucked. Its space Pocahontas with an extra hour of stuff thrown in. No one talks about it because the novelty has worn off. The same thing with happen if the "land" continues. They'll throw lots of new rides and effects at it and people will go...and that will be the only reason they go.

Like i said most sensible people will be somewhat open minded and at least give it a chance and not call it a failure without seeing a shred of concept art...cars land is huge because of the great visuals hopefully this will too

~So when you ride Splash Mountain, do you exit the ride and think "I don't care what Disney did it's still just Song of the South?" Is Tower of Tower just the Twilight Zone on steroids? By this logic, Rock n Roller Coaster is just Aerosmith on wheels. Right? :goodvibes

THIS. The movies' popularity will come and go, but as long as the new area and rides are interesting and unique, people won't care. Is Cars going to be popular forever??

Also, how many people who love Splash Mountain have even seen Song of the South, or know that it's even based on a movie??

I can see someone taking their child or grandchild to Avatar land years from now and the kid saying...
Kid: "This ride is so cool, but what is Avatar?"
Adult: "It's a movie that was popular when I was young"
Kid: "Oh ok" *runs to the next ride*

The story sucked.

This is not a universally held opinion though. I think most people enjoyed the movie for what it was. The sequels should do well, and I think the themepark attractions will be popular as long as they contain the wow factor.

Ok, I admit it. I'm dumb. Can someone explain this article like I am five.

So Disney is working on a technology say where you look at a projection of a butterfly and air technology will make it feel like the butterfly is moving around on your hand ?

If so that is absolutely amazing. The possibilities would be endless.

I'm with the crowd that doubts Avatar makes sense. I think Universal has it right by building attractions with limited life in large utility buildings so they can be redone every 5-8 years.

Pick things that have "forever life" like Lion Ling, Star Wars, or The Lone Ranger.

(that was a joke there!)

Avatarland will be a flop, regardless

Cool technology, doesn't necessarily have to be used for Avatarland. It could be used for interaction with projected animated characters or 4D ride experiences

As long as it isn't Avatar, it could be cool? All these anti-navites!

To answer your questions in order: yes, yes, and yes.

I go to DL and WDW because Disney immerses me in an environment that I want to be in. Avatar is not an environment I want to be in.

1) I like rides like Pirates and Haunted Mansion. I ride them every time I'm at DL or MK. I never ride Splash Mountain, I really don't like Song of the South.

2) Tower of Terror is meh. I don't like the drops, and Haunted Mansion does the spooky theme better.

3) I've never ridden Rock'n'Roller coaster. I don't like Aerosmith. If it was a band I liked, I probably would have ridden it by now, mostly to look at the memorabilia of the band I like. Aerosmith memorabilia is irrelevant to me.

Everybody has their favorite rides, and not-so-favorite rides. Sometimes, it has more to do with the ride motion itself - coasters vs dark rides, etc. Sometimes, it's the theme, and the overall experience. For many people, Avatar has little to no appeal as a theme, leaving the ride experience as the ONLY draw.

For example, I love Pirates of the Caribbean, but hate It's a Small World. Almost the same ride experience, totally different themes. I'm not the only one.

On the other hand, I don't even like motion simulators, but I've tried to ride Star Tours as often as possible to see every combination of films. Disney can build ANYTHING Star Wars, and I'll be there forthwith.

~Great comment, thanks for sharing your perspective on how and why *you* experience Disney. It's in your own way & I totally respect that. You've made mention that you don't like TOT, Splash Mountain, and have never ridden RNRC because you don't like the IP's -- regardless, these are among the most popular attractions at WDW. Are you somehow implying that these attractions should have never been built based upon your personal preferences and what *you* define as appealing???

~And again, you as in the "collective you" have yet to present anything to support this claim that Avatar won't appeal to "many" people -- it's just feelings and emotions from a vocal few -- "who didn't like the movie." I didn't like the movie, this in no way represents the majority of people or potential theme park visitors.

~I strongly believe the majority of theme park visitors will enjoy Avatarland. If you build it, they will come. I wasn't too thrilled about the New Fantasyland, but in no way would I ever expect Disney to cancel their plans based on my likes and dislikes. I found the New Fantasyland to be very beautiful, the two attractions are mildly amusing and I can't wait for the 7DMT to be completed.
:goodvibes

~Yes!!! Thank you, 101disneyfan! Very well said. :cool1:

~Mind boggling is an understatement. ;)

~Hey there, Skater! I totally agree! The budget is decent enough at $500,000,000 to start. And, then there is the collaboration with James Cameron and the Imagineers! They are going to create something spectacular. I can't wait. :cool1:

If they can take the bean-counters assigned to oversee the Avatar budget as a whole and tell them to just count Joe Rodhe's beans and nobody else's, Avatar will be great.
~LOL. OUCH. :rotfl2: Well, at least they won't have to do a space mission on Pandora. This should help keep the budget in tact (hopefully).

Yeah, Avatar, the highest grossing film ever made. Despite the people who hate it, it was actually extremely popular. They aren't exactly srtiking while the iron is hot, but the the sequels will reignite it.
~Fabulous comment! Avatar will become relevant again (not that it needs to be) with the upcoming sequels. The theaters aren't even equipped to show the films in the format Cameron intends to shoot the sequels in -- which is 60 FPS. He has assembled a team to provide support and assist the all of the movie theaters with upgrading their current projection equipment and screens. Peter Jackson filmed The Hobbit in 48 FPS (the same as Soarin') and the majority of theaters were not equipped to show the film in that format. :goodvibes

Like i said most sensible people will be somewhat open minded and at least give it a chance and not call it a failure without seeing a shred of concept art...cars land is huge because of the great visuals hopefully this will too
~I totally agree. I remember when no one was thrilled about Carsland, it had virtually no buzz. While, everyone was excited for The New Fantasyland. The fact is, most people don't what they "want" -- which is why it's best we leave this to the "experts." I don't know what to expect and I like that.

THIS. The movies' popularity will come and go, but as long as the new area and rides are interesting and unique, people won't care. Is Cars going to be popular forever??

Kid: "Oh ok" *runs to the next ride*
~This! :rotfl: I just learned of "Song of the South" a few years ago. I had never heard of the book or movie, and had no idea it served as inspiration for Splash Mountain! I *love* Splash Mountain and I still haven't seen "Song of the South." :lmao:

This is not a universally held opinion though. I think most people enjoyed the movie for what it was. The sequels should do well, and I think the themepark attractions will be popular as long as they contain the wow factor.
~I totally agree with this! Avatarland will have the *wow* factor. Pandora is so beautiful -- there is so much content for the Imagineers to draw from and become inspired. At this point, we have no idea how the Imagineers will interpret and adapt Pandora for Animal Kingdom!

As long as it isn't Avatar, it could be cool? All these anti-navites!
~Wow, you're way too generous with this "all these" comment. I don't think so. :lmao:

~Wow, twebber55. You find the coolest and most interesting stuff! Thanks for sharing! :cool1:
