Has anyone ever not been able to upgrade at 24 hours in advance?

My hubby is a little larger and would be more comfortable in business class. So I wanted to upgrade him. Otherwise I thought of buying an extra seat in coach.

Any thoughts? We're flying on a Saturday and returning on a friday if that makes a difference.

yes, although in my case was looking for 3 seats

Depending on when (popular time for travel, direct flight, etc.) you may just have enough empty seats for some extra room if you are willing to head to the back of the plane.

While you can check the seat availability on their website, i'm thinking it doesn't factor in those who haven't paid to book their seats. Have you called AT to ask as to how 'booked' the flight currently is? Will give you an idea as you get closer to your date your options.

We upgrade on AirTran frequently. You can look at your flight to see what Business class seats are available before the 24 hr. mark. If there are seats available that you'd like, check in at the 24 hr. mark and select the "Upgrade" option. Keep in mind, though, that if you're on a connecting flight you will have to pay your upgrade charge for each leg of the flight. It's a much better deal if you're on a nonstop flight, but usually still a better price than paying the full business class fare.

According to where you are flying from it may be tough. Those longer flights from the west tend to have the upgrades go faster than those shorter trips from the east coast.

According to a thread on Flyer Talk you can actually pay to upgrade at 12:01 AM Eastern Time by calling AirTran. They may charge for a fee for using a phone representative though. $15 I think to use a phone rep to facilitate the request.
