So we are supposed to be going Dec 9-16 with 6 of us: My immediate family and my FIL and MIL.

FIL has cancer and is not doing real well. MIL wants to just not go. FIL paid for the airline tickets for all of us.

We all have our own names on the tickets BUT if FIL doesn't go down, will the rest of us have problems on the way home since he paid for the tickets but isn't flying with us anymore?

Clear as mud?

No, you should have no problems. I used to routinely fly on tickets purchased on a company credit card for example.
Sorry to hear about your FIL

Indeed, you should have no problems. Airline tickets are unusual since, with many airlines, once an airline ticket is purchased in a certain passenger's name, that money is tied directly to the passenger, no longer to the purchaser. In those cases, you'd have trouble if one of you purchased the tickets, and then tried to use the residual value of your FIL's ticket to purchase another airline ticket for yourself.
