Air force commissioning gift

Very good friends of ours have a son who is going to be commissioned into the Air Force this Sat. We have been invited to attend the ceremony and then for a private luncheon. This young man has been like a nephew to us and our boys adored him when they were little (our boys now 12 and 13). Is this something we should bring a gift to? I think we should do something, but I'm not sure what. DH was also his sponsor when Thomas was confirmed (we are all Catholic). Is there a patron saint of pilots? I think I would like to get something religious but if there is something more appropriate I'd like to know.

TIA!

Thanks, but still wondering if a gift is appropriate and what should it be?

Don't really know but I think this would be a good gift (a bit pricey though...)

Did you try posting your question under the "United We Stand" forum at the top of the Community page? I think you'll probably get more answers there.

Thanks, I didn't even know there was the United we Stand forum.

Thanks for the idea Charade. Not sure if we can swing it with the Christmas season upon us :)

DBIL is an air force pilot. I asked my sister and she said that he didn't really get any gifts, but it was also his college graduation. She says that she wouldn't get something then. It's a bigger deal when they graduate pilot training and get their wings.

Thomas is also graduating sometime soon, or maybe he did this past week. We have never been invited to college graduations so I wouldn't do a grad gift, but maybe a card. I guess I feel like I shouldn't show up empty handed even if it is just a token of our affection for him.

I'm sure cash would always be welcomed or a gift card for a Best Buy type store. 2Lts don't make all that much money - I remember those days!

As mentioned, 2LTs don't make squat for money. Gift Cards would be fine.
He's just being commissioned, so he's not a pilot yet, right? :confused3

I can't think of anything religious in nature to give, sorry.

DH did not receive any gifts for his commissioning/graduation. But we got married a week later too and got many gifts for that.

My sister was commissioned this past August. It was a very small ceremony (only three others commissioning), but I don't remember anyone bringing gifts other than some flowers my sister received.

If you would like to get something that he will likely use for years to come, maybe look at the Luminox watches. They have casual and dress ones. I bought one for DH years ago and he still wears it daily. I picked the casual one, that has a fabric band and velcro closure, he said it is the most comfortable watch he's ever owned.

My husband was Air Force for seven years. I just asked him and he said it's not traditionally a gift-giving occasion. If you do give him a gift, make it something small and meaningful. :thumbsup2

How about a book?

Winged Defense: The Development and Possibilities of Modern Air Power—Economic and Military by William Mitchell

Wonder if the Air Force still remembers him.......

Thanks everyone. I guess we will pass on the gift since it doesn't seem appropriate, but I think we will still get him a card of congrats.
