I usually choose air Canada - especially when traveling for work. I am here at Miami International and they refused to let me board with a carryon, a computer bag and a purse. They said I had to consolidate 1 bag or check one (for 27 dollars tax in). I flew here from Toronto 4 days ago no issue! But they claim as of this week they are cracking down! So I'm out 27 bucks, have to wait for my luggage before my connection and I purchased a Juicy Couture sweatshirt for my daughter that had better still be in my bag in Toronto! Thought I'd give all you ladies a heads up.

I fly 9-12 times a year and have seen gate agents stop people with three carry-on items and tell them they can consolidate one bag into another or check an item. This is nothing new.:confused3.

If the YYZ agents let you through, consider yourself lucky. Technically, the agents in Miami are correct, it's ONE carry and ONE personal item. As a frequent traveler - the volume of bags people are lugging on planes these days to avoid fees is insane, and I honestly appreciate when the gate agents crack down.

Sorry up the policy is 1 carry on and one personal item.. you lucked out leaving but were not in the right to have so many carry on items. It's unfair to other passengers.

About time!!! Carry on items are getting ridiculous!:thumbsup2
:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

I can't believe the sense of entitlement people have these days; I've seen numerous times agents telling people consign or check one in and the amount of rudeness they get from fliers who feel they are entitled to bring all their stuff on is baffling!

It sounds like you are a frequent flyer. Really? You were surprised?
For years I've been travelling with only my carry-on and my purse as per the 'rules'.

Sorry you're out of your $27, but I am glad to see they're cracking down on the carry-on rule as well (though to do so on the return leg is a bit cheeky).

To (slightly) derail the thread, what's the most carry-ons people have seen?

I've seen 10, and the lady kept throwing a tantrum when she was told she had to check 2 of them. She kept arguing until (after encouraging words of support from passengers) the senior flight attendant finally upped to anty by telling her she needed to check 8 of them or get off the plane. She chose to check them and the flight attendant received a round of applause from the passengers :lmao:

I thought the rules were one carry on bag, a business bag (laptop bag or briefcases) and one personnel bag (purse or waist pack)

I had checked this out for my parents, who are flying in 3 weeks. My mom was wondering. You ARE allowed to have a purse in addition to your 2 carry-on allowance items. It even says so. The problem might be the purse was too large. They have specific measurement listed for the purse:

The following are examples of items that are allowed, in addition to your carry-on allowance:
Coat or other outer garment,
Small purse measuring no more than 25cm x 30cm x 14cm (10in x 12in x 5.5 in). Larger purses will be included in your carry-on allowance.
Infant care item (e.g. diaper bag),
Stroller - collapsed diameter not to exceed 25.5 cm (10 in) and length not to exceed 92 cm (36 in),
Child restraint device if a seat has been purchased for the child/infant,
Special needs items (see 'Special Items' section below),
Small electronic device such as cell phone or MP3 player.

That is what I thought and have travelled that way many times with AC. My computer bag and purse easily fit in the spot under the seat in front and my carryon in the luggage storage above.

Agree. Nothing drives me more crazy than all the carry on items people bring on the plane and get away with. I don't know how many times we have sat there waiting for people to find a place for their stuff.

I've been asked to consolidate when I've had computer bag, purse & carry-on. Some gate agents will over look it, some not. Now I just put my laptop in the front pouch of my carry on, and take it out before stowing the carry on up top.
It's a pain, and think in the long run, holds up the boarding, since you have to stop and take the laptop out before stowing bag.

Don't flame me! But I do agree there is way too much carry on in some instances. But....It is the airlines making with ever increasing luggage fees, and lost luggage. #1 reason I take a carry on is because the airlines have lost my luggage several times, so I carry-on a change of clothes, shoes, bathing suit, pr of jammies, and toothbrush, etc. No fun arriving on vacay with nothing :(

The last time did it for me, luggage didn't make my 2nd flight due to delays, flight was arriving at midnight and my luggage was on the next flight. Airline quit 24 hr delivery and told me I had to wait till the next day for luggage, but promised me I would be the first delivery in the morning, after I explained we were only staying overnight at a hotel not far from the airport. We were leaving the next day. Well, there we were with nothing, at a beach front hotel and in clothing we left Canada in :sad2: Luggage didn't arrive till 5pm, a far cry from first thing in the AM, and I had to pay for late check out waiting for my luggage. So yes, now I bring carry on with enough to last me at least a day.

I'm all for carry on when possible..as long as the bag is light and IF there were a hard landing and it flew out..won't kill someone. But I think one carry on and a purse should be it. No more. And no trying to squish a big, heavy bag to make it look carry on size! I like what they have in the U.K. They weigh your bag and make sure it fits through a frame of sorts to ensure size. LOTS are turned back for check in. As for the baggage fees now..I wish they would just hike the fares to include baggage and quit the nickle and diming...
My 2 cents.

Sue M, I too always take a carry-on with a change of clothes and other nescessities. Just like yourself, I too have been left stranded waiting for luggage, once it arrived the day before I returned from a 2 week vacation in Hawaii ... which is probably the best place to be stranded without luggage, all you need is a bathing suit, shorts, and a shirt.

As stated by other posters, I think airlines are cracking down now on the number of carry-ons because of the quantity of carry-ons and also the size of some of the "purses." I'm sure flight attendants and gate agents have long ago tired of the arguments with some of the passengers that their 20 gallon "purse" is really checked baggage :lmao:

I was shocked to see the size of some of the "carry on" suitcases people were bringing onto the plane when we came back from Disney in January. It made it very difficult to store everyone's items when all these larger suitcases were being allowed on the plane. One lady got on with a suitcase that was definetely oversized. We later see her pulling out an avg sized pillow and blanket for her child for the late night flight.
