Air Canada flight credit question

It's looking more and more like I'm going to have to cancel my October trip. We have a relative who isn't doing too well and I wouldn't feel very good about taking a trip while all of this is going on.

I know if I cancel my Air Canada flights, I'll get a credit, less $50 cancellation fee and less $50 rebooking fee. The thing is we booked our October flights last December so I have to use the credits up within a couple of months. The thing is, I can't think of any flights we'd need to book by then. We do have flights for a January trip.

So here's my question.

If we end up cancelling, could I cancel my January flights and use my October credits towards booking new January flights? I figure I can then use the January credits to purchase January 2011 flights or some other flight in 2010 (these ones would expire in July or August 2010). I'm not even sure this is worth it because we're going to spend an additional $100/person changing a second set of tickets.

Is there anything else I can do? I can't think of any other way to salvage the credits - while it's not much ($173/ticket) I hate to write them off entirely.

Hmmm .... I don't want to give you false hope, but I thought that the credit had to be used within one year of the flight date, not the purchase date. I could very well be wrong, but it's worth checking out.

I hope things with your relative work out for the best.

Op you could do that but I am unsure of how cost productive that is. Btw The credit is good for one year from the purchase date of the ticket.

It may differ by fare class, but I happen to be flying tomorrow and have my ticket out. I'm on a Tango Plus fare (also flying Canada to US).

Here is what it says:

Cancellations can be made up to 45 minutes before departure....the value of the unused tickets can be applied within a one year period from date of issue of the original tickets to the value of the new ticket subject to a $75 CAD change fee, per direction, per passenger, plus applicable taxes and any additional fare difference...The new outbound travel must commence within a one year period from the original date of ticket issuance.

So, it is from the date you bought the tickets (not the date of travel) and it sounds like it will be over $150 per ticket to change.

Also, if your January tickets have gone up in price, it makes your idea even less worthwhile.
