Age for kids meals

We are heading for a trip in just over 2 weeks. Getting excited. We aren't doing a ton of reservations for meals, we have club level and are light eaters. But I noticed the kids meals are for 9 and under! My son is 10 and would much rather have things from the kid's meal section, and i would rather him have the smaller portions (he is the only big eater in the family).

Will he be able to order off of the kids menu at age 10? We are staying in the contemporary.

He will be able to order off the children's menu for almost all locations that are ala cart. However, for shows, buffets, and any fixed fee dinning experience he will be charged as an adult.

I've been able to order off the children's menu as an adult, but at buffets he will be charged as an adult and some TS restaurants might insist that he stick to the adult menu. That's pretty rare, though!

Unless you are on the DP and have an age attached to your account, the servers are not going to ask for proof of being under nine.

At most ala carte restaurants this will be fine. There are some non Disney owned restaurants where it is not allowed. At buffets, all you care to eat, dinner shows he will be charged as an adult.

1) If paying OOP, no problem.
2) MrsRustyScupper and I frequently eat from the kiddie menu or split/share an adult entrée.
3) As mentioned above, the 10-year-old will be charged adult prices at a . . .
. . . buffet
. . . AYCTE
. . . character meal
. . . dinner show

Thanks for the info. It does bother me some...no way does my 10 year old eat close to enough to be charged an adult rate (the cut off is 12 almost everywhere else, and that makes sense). And being that I have had weight loss surgery, I also don't eat enough to eat at the adult rate, we aren't going to go to any buffets (which seemed to be all the character meals).

I'm a WLS patient as well, just get used to the no buffets at Disney thing. As much as it stinks, I see where they're coming from and it's not going to change, sadly. You can always meet the characters in the parks!! :thumbsup2

PS some 10 year olds eat A LOT...I think it just depends on the kid!! Haha

1) The 10-year-old cutoff dates back to days of more classifications.
. . . infant
. . . child
. . . junior
. . . adult
2) When the "junior" was eliminated, they kept the 9-year-old cutoff age.
3) They got away with it and had few complaints.
4) Now, it is accepted and they just stay with it.
.
NOTE: In the room reservation system, the "junior" classification still pops-up. We have lots of fun kidding new Front Desk people regarding this. Kind of like sending them on a Spin-and-Marty Snipe Hunt. (If you are too young to know of Disney's Spin-and-Marty serial on the original Mickey Mouse Club, do a Google.)

Exactly. We went to my son's for Thanksgiving weekend and he insisted we order three large pizzas for the six of us and we didn't disagree because we knew. Our nine year old grandson easily chowed down on one pizza himself (he let me have a slice) and then helped himself to the leftovers of my son's and husband's pizza. This is the kid who arrives at his great-grandmother's house when we arrived on the first night and asks what was for dinner. His parents said "you ate before you got here!" He said, "but I'm still hungry" and ate a full size ham and cheese sandwich from Subway an hour later.

Age is just a number and business decisions have to be made.

My daughter is 13 and she orders off the kid menu all the time. We pay OOP most trips though. As others have said, it really matters for buffet and family style /character meals,

It always amazes me how much kids can eat. But I don't have kids of my own yet, haha. I guess it makes sense because they are running around all the time and growing  but yeah, I've seen some kids under 12 put away 3 times what I could eat BEFORE my gastric surgery. It's crazy!! Disney had to draw the line somewhere. 10 and up makes sense to me!
