After the armed robbery of the Disney and Norwegian cruiseline passengers, during the Segway excursions around a green area around Nassau, both cruise lines said they have cancelled future excursions of same. I wonder if Disney will consider pulling out of Nassau all together.

Nassau really is a nasty place. Very dirty and the shopping is really nothing special, unless you want to buy drugs which are sold very OPENLY on the streets. The only redeeming thing about Nassau is Atlantis which is a very nice resort. But do you make a stop at an island, especially Disney, for a casino?

I believe the ships' registry is with Nassau and that plays into stopping there.

Disney has too much to lose here, especially with 2 new ships coming on board. I'm sure Disney will do what ever is necessary to make its cruise as attractive as possible. In my mind, however Nassau does nothing to make their cruise attractive.

I think it's more up to the Nassau government to step in here and clean up their act. I don't know the details about the segway robbery, but it seems like an isolated incident.

Cruise ships have been stopping in Nassau since I can remember. It's a convenient stop from Florida and the other option - Freeport isn't much better. Due to US laws, a cruise ship registered outside the US (and 99% are) must stop at a foreign port during the sailing, which is why they all stop in Nassau. Sailing anywhere else takes too much time and fuel and until there are sailings to Cuba, ships will continue to stop in Nassau.

I have always wanted to know the answer to this question. Since Castaway Cay is part of the Bahamas would it not count as a foreign port? I personally do not think Nassau is that bad, but I could take it or leave it.

Mike do you have insider info?

I'd love to See You in C-U-B-A.:goodvibes

It's only a matter of time. As soon as the US government lifts the ban on travel to Cuba, there will be cruise ships going there.

See you at the Tropicana! :cool1:

I have a feeling stopping in Nassau is more about port contracts than about fulfilling the US law requirements. Cruise lines probably sign multi year deals with the ports to allow them to stop there, which brings a lot of money to the island.

People don't normally spend much money (if any) at Castaway Cay.

Technically, I am sure you are correct. But there is probably some stipulation written in some contract that the local Bahamian economy has a chance to grab the tourist bucks.

I am jealous of my Canadian cousins. They enjoy it. (Even with Castro still there!)

Even if the ban is lifted on Cuba, Cuba is still a political hot potato. I'm not so sure that Disney will want to deal with any political fallout at this point. I know other cruiselines will be their in a heart beat.

Don't be jealous ... you're going to Walt Disney World!

Cuba will probably not be family friendly ... that's for sure. But having another port as a choice, will make Nassau compete for cruise business, which is better for the consumer.

I hadn't heard about this incident. Do you have a link to the story you can share?

You know ... I just realized that the robbers left the most expensive things ... they could have stolen the Segways, which are worth quite a bit more than whatever they took from the tourists. :confused3

Probably harder to fence a couple dozen Segways on Nassau. Might give up their anonymity.

I took this tour with a bunch of DISers while on the podcast cruise. It was very fun, but I just didn't like the looks of Nassau. I had pretty much already decided to stay onboard for the next Podcast cruise. This won't help in changing my mind.

Typically, most contracts have outs and I'm sure Disney's does with the Port of Nassau.

Thank you both for the links. It's sounds like a frightening experience for those 18 folks.

If they took the Segways, they would be discovered as the robbers pretty quickly, I think. Not just that but I doubt it would be easy to sell segways on the street.
