After Christmas - Christmas tree sales?

Last weekend I tried to set up our Christmas tree and it was dead only the bottom lit up. I had been thinking about getting a new one since last year since this was just a $20 tree from Walmart that is about 5 years old. I was thinking of just skipping the big tree this year since it is just DH and me anyways. Has anyone had any luck getting a good deal on a Christmas tree after Christmas? Where did you go? How much of a deal did you get?

As much as it seems easier to get a pre-lite tree. It think it is better to get a non-prelite for this reason. I have had my 6 foot non-prelite for 20+ years, no worries about having the lights go out.

Now to answer your question, I know they go on sale/clearance after the holiday but to be honest unless you get there as Target/Walmart open on 12/26 the chances of you getting anything is very limited. They are pretty picked over by then anyway.

There's a tool someone mentioned on another forum I was on that you can purchase off amazon to check if the whole strand is actually dead or if it just needs a bulb replaced, and the tool helps you figure out which bulb it is too. I think it may have cost around $20 though, so if that's all you paid for your tree it may not be worth it unless you really love your tree.

I know Michaels and Target both had their trees 50% off if you didn't want to wait until after Christmas. I'm not sure if the Target sale is over but the Michael's one ends the 6th. Sears/Kmart also had there's on sale as well but it may be over now. You should be able to check on their website fairly easily though. (:

I got a nice one half off at either lowes or Home Depot the day after Christmas last year. I ordered online for in store pick up so I didn't have to rush over first thing. Good thing I did too because the clerk told me someone came in when they opened that morning and bought up all their remaining trees.

I don't know about the bigger, fancier trees, but I bought my 6' tree at Family Dollar just after Christmas a few years ago for $10. They always seem to have 'left overs', lol. Mine is not pre-lit tho.

I bought that and found the results uneven at best. It worked last year, but I couldn't get it to work this year no matter how hard I tried. We eventually just got a string of lights to get us through the season with this one and we'll get another tree when they go on sale.

I agree that pre-lit trees are convenient in principle, but when you start having problems with whole sections of lights you give back the convenience you got at the beginning.

I ended up getting a 130 dollar tree for 80 dollars after Christmas last year. Instead of the traditional pre-lit lights, it had fiber optics, so certain "needles" are the fiber optics and they light up a soft, muted light, and they switch colours every now and then. I LOOOVE these lights and the tree was a great deal. Much better than my last tree.

I bought a 7 ft high end "real feel" tree in October 2 years ago. It was about $400, but normally closer to $800. She said they rarely have any left by Christmas. It is not pre-lit but I don't mind stringing lights. This tree is awesome and I plan to use it for years.

In my front room I have a 7ft prelit tree. I have been stringing lights on it since the day we got it because it didn't have enough. I detest that tree with every bone in my body. Last year only one section still lights up so I had to string the whole tree. Again I don't mind hanging lights, but I specifically paid not to have to do it and the tree is only 5 years old. Plus it doesn't look terribly fake, but its nowhere near as good as my other tree and it takes forever to "fluff" it so it doesn't look fake. I am hoping to go next year and replace this tree with a similar one as our other.

I have seen plenty of trees after christmas available, but they are usually the really fake looking trees at the big box retailers. I would check super early next year for a good artificial tree. Around here, a lot of the pool supply stores and nursery's have christmas shops that they set up in the fall.
