After a vasectomy.....

One needs to use birth control for the next 6-8 weeks and then get tested to see if all the swimmers are gone. Until the Dr. gives the :thumbsup2 one needs to take precautions.

The procedure was "easy". No frozen peas, just lounged on the sofa for the evening and took Motrin. The doc schedules guys on Friday evenings so there's no need to miss work. I too was told the 20 times rule of thumb, but until the "all clear" it's not safe.

If someone became pregnant 2 years after the fact, I think a sperm count test would be in order, and if that came back negative I'd think that (unless their names were Joseph and Mary) someone better be getting a DNA test!

DH drove himself to and from the doctor and we went out for lunch afterwards. He did take it easy the rest of the day though.

I don't know about the vasectomy, but my youngest DD is proof that you can get pregnant after a tubal lygation (sp?), meaning I got pregnant after my tubes were tied. Yikes, since then I have had a hystorectomy, if I get pregnant now, I know that God really wanted me to have that child.

DH and I went for his consult on January 2nd this year with the urologist. We signed the consent forms and THEN the urologist tells us that it's generlally 70% effective... you have to go back over the course of the next few months with samples to check if it's "clear".... but he said that there are instances after the time period is up that there may still be swimmers and the procedure is repeated :scared1: Needless to say, DH did NOT have the procedure done. Due to medical reasons, I should not attempt another pregnancy :( and a tubal ligation is out of the picture due to my BP issues.... we were going to try for another urologist, but due to our stupid HMO, it's the only urologist in our MD's network :(

My dh had to give the Dr. a sample at 2 weeks and then again at 4 to make sure there were no more sperm. He was clean at 4 weeks-so don't go by that 20x ejac. He was supposed to go every year after but only went twice. I will tell you about a not so pleasant side effect. You can get cysts inside around the surgery site. They are very painful. For years, a dose of antibiotics worked but 3 years ago he had to have more surgery to remove the cysts. That surgery was extremely painful for him. I'm used to a blood and gore but I was really really shocked to see this area after surgery. "The boys" were the size of 2 LARGE grapefruit and black as night. He ended up with a hematoma that looked like a third boy if you know what I mean. He was flat on his back on vicoden for most of a week and off work for 2. The doc said there were still a couple of cysts he couldn't get to and would have to come out later (over dh's dead body :scared1: ). Also another horror story, my neighbor's best friend got preggers after her dh's vasectomy 7 years before. He divorced her but ended up with egg on his face when the dna tests came back that the child was his. Just be aware it's not 100%, I don't worry too much because of the damage done to dh's tubes after this last surgery :cool1:

I have to tell you that my husband had his vasectomy when my daughter was a newborn & there was no way he got the required # of ejaculations in 6-8 weeks. He's too lazy to take care of that himself & I was way too tired. At some point we lost count & he never did go in & get checked.

So how many children do you have now?

Too lazy? :lmao:

NEVER!

Sat up and watch my entire op.

The smell of the burner was not that great but I didn't want him cutting the wrong area.

Was out and about the next day riding stand-up jetskis in 2.

Between me and DW (thankful she didn't have to get it done) we had no problem getting to the 20 ( I wanted to make sure everything still worked).

The retest came back a lonely river with no one left in the pool.

Yeah, I didn't like the burning smell either. Especially "down there"!

This is great reading and couldn't be better timing!

As I sit here almost 9 months pregnant, getting more and more uncomfortable by the day, a vasectomy sounds better and better! BIL had one last winter and revovered A-OK. DH may disagree, but after having 2 babies at 9.5 and 9.25 lbs a piece and this one probably nearing 9+lbs,I feel its the least he can do! :rotfl: I've donw my part....

We will be sure to use protection for a while and then test, test and retest to be sure that his swimmers are all gone, I am done with this whole pregnancy thing!

My girlfriend got pregnant 5 years after her dh's surgery. Doctor said it was a one in a million case. Luckily, even though it was entirely unexpected, she had always wanted 4 kids, and she is a much loved little girl

I got pregnant two years after my DH vasectomy. He had gone back in for his 2 recommended counts and both actually came back negative.

Ok, the last two posts are scaring the crap out of me!! The main reason I got a snip is to eliminate the chances of my gf getting pregnant. I know the odds are very very low that it would happen to me but I guess it's more comforting to know that condoms have a much higher failure rate.

Maybe you should also get his opinion. He may want YOU to get "fixed".

BTW - had mine done 11 years ago. Bag of peas and ice. For the scotch.

Well, I wouldn't worry too much. They are pretty unusual cases. My dh had one a couple of years ago, and I don't give it a second thought.

My brother ended up having surgery twice. It seems the doctor didn't snip as much of the tube as he was supposed to snip. Fortunately, my brother and his wife were still using protection.

I have to laugh about the burning smell. My husband saw a little puff of smoke and in his valium induced haze, announced, "Hey, they've elected a new pope." Pretty funny coming from a nice Jewish guy.

Unfortunately, the humor stopped there. He developed a small hematoma (sp?) which caused him significant discomfort for about a month or so. They think it was because he is on aspirin therapy. He survived though and after a handful of tests, no swimmers were found. ;)

EdDad had one Last year..Complications..Bruising,swelling ,hematoma..Lots of percoset..Lots pain for 3 weeks....These are unusual complications but they happen...He also had to have 2 procedures.Um..One for each side because one side is *different* from the other..
