When I was in 6th grade, we went on a camping trip as a class. The campground was down the road from the school, less than a mile from my house! I could have walked home.
I was not popular, and I was put in a cabin with one of my worst antagonizers. I remember just wanting to go home. I literally threw up, and remember calling my mom in tears to come and get me. She did, and I fell asleep in the back of the station wagon on the way home. (the whole 4 minute car ride). Why did I think I was miles and miles away? Anyway....
So for years, I thought that I was just so horribly home sick. Well, the other night, I was talking to a friend of mine, who was a classmate back then. We were at a ballgame with our kids, and I brought up the 6th grade trip. He said.."Oh yeah, I was so sick." I said "homesick?" He said no, literally sick. Stomach bug. He had to go home. WHAT??? So, after 30 years of thinking I couldn't handle being a mile away from home, I probably just had a stomach bug. LOL
OK, I will admit, I did miss being home, but that was because my cabinmates were being mean to me, and I didn't know how to swim so I couldn't participate in any water activities. It just surprised me that I would get physically ill by being homesick. I feel better now, knowing that it was probably a stomach bug.
