We are planning a trip for hopefully September and are very interested in renting DVC points my husband is very skeptical, is it better to go through a broker rather direct from a person? Also having a very hard time deciding on a resort AKV SV or Boardwalk? Thanks in advance!:-)

You may a bit late to get BWV, Food & Wine is on and that fills up quickly.
First choice would be to find a friend that has points to rent, then a broker, and try the DIS rent/trade board.

You're within 7 months; I wouldn't assume Boardwalk is available for multiple days.

This may cause your spouse to say it's a scam, but... it's not. DVC owners can start booking 11 months out where they own, and book anywhere 7 months out. Early birds get worms, etc.

I second what BillPA said. Through a friend, or with one of the reputable broker, your risk is very minimal. Going through the boards does require more trust.

As said, Food and Wine is going on (it starts earlier this year), so I would not count on BWV. September is in the 7 month mark, and there is full availability out there, but I do not recommend waiting much longer.

While we have rented direct - but there is a greater inherent risk in doing so...you need to find a trustworthy owner that is not going to stick it to you. We found one here on the DIS, and used references to ensure the person was legit, but we knew there was risk in doing this...I probably wouldn't rent direct from an owner again unless I knew the owner.

With the reputable rental companies there is almost no risk - the companies guarantee your reservation or you get your money back. (The "risk" being that something happens with the owner of the points - the rental company will guarantee your money but I have heard of two incidents where the owner of the points weren't paying their dues, and Disney pulled the reservation...the rental company reimbursed the renter, but of course the reservation was lost. This is a again 2 incidents against 1,000s of rentals, so I would consider the risk very low.) Generally, you will pay about 1/2 to 2/3rds what Disney charges for a room by renting.

Another negative to renting - you can't make changes to your reservation...if you think you will need to change your dates - don't bother renting.

As others have pointed out, for a September trip you are already less than 7 months out from your dates. At this point, owners can book anywhere, so many of the more popular resorts (Boardwalk, Grand Floridian, Beach Club, Poly) will already be booked up. You may still be able to get Animal Kingdom if you book quickly. The good news is that by using < 7 months points you would likely save some money versus priority (> 7 month) points. Contact one of the rental companies and do a price comparison with Disney.

ok perfect, I have been looking at that one. I see that they are very popular so I didn't know if they would be a little more pricey! Thanks :)!

Dave's prices are comparable to anyone who is independently renting. If you're within 7 months, you might be able to snag someone's recently cancelled reservation, or you can pay ($14 per point I believe). That's about what everyone else charges.

I just rented my points out with David's and they were very good. All gone and I was paid 70% (rest on check in) within 24 hours. They seem very efficient.

For most situations I'd go direct if one can find someone their comfortable with but without time to get comfortable, I'd likely go through a company.
