Advice!!!!!!!!

Oh, here's another one for which I have an 'easy tip'! Affect is an Action word, i.e. verb! :teeth:
Eh, no problem. Thanks! I must have been thinking of the silent "p" in pneumoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis!

I like the hint and I have no idea if you spelled that word correctly or not. I'll just have to take your word for it. ;):worship::worship:

Although I had thought mneomonic was pneumonic. :rolleyes1

Then and Than. Then talks about time. Than is used when comparing.

I usually proofread prior to posting and correct anything I find incorrect. It's the receptionist in me. However, there are times where I have found mistakes after I posted and I'll just hit the "Edit" button and correct it. If I'm not sure I'll put "SP?" right after the word.

When I went to business school, I learned to type and proofread. We were told not to rely on spell checker b/c the word could be spelled right, just not used correctly.

The instructor also told us that it is a good idea to have someone else read over what you typed. While you are proofreading, you can see a word spelled correctly when actually, it's spelled wrong. Which is what happened to her one day. She was trying to spell the word "assets" but forgot to type the "t". When she read it to herself, she saw "assets". When she had someone else read it, that person immediately caught her mistake :rotfl:. Good thing, b/c the document the instructor typed was a legal document :rolleyes1.

Desert and Dessert are two that I see confused a lot.

Remember:
Dessert has two Ss because you'd rather have two Desserts when you're in the Desert.

Another way to remember it is that Desserts spelled backwards is STRESSED.

These are my favorites. I seem to remember the whole "principal is your pal" thing from a Beverly Cleary book... can't remember which one. Now that is the literature I liked reading in school... LOL. Here's hoping that the Ramona and Beezus movie does it justice. I'm either gonna love it or I'm gonna hate it. (And yes, I know "gonna" isn't a word :p)

I love this thread. I agree that everyone has access to spell-check and there are so many who don't seem to know it exists. I am not perfect but I will correct something even after I post it because it is a reflection of me even if I will never meet anyone on this message board.

My other pet peeves are spoken words that are clearly not correct-

brefast for breakfast

he stoled it, instead of he stole it

I brought it at the supermarket and bought it to the party, instead of I bought it at the supermarket and brought it to the party.

One of the bigwigs at my organization sent out a memo in an email with the word "pubic" in the title, where he meant to say public. :lmao:

They retracted the email as quickly as they could, but if anyone had opened it yet, it couldn't be retracted from their computer. Lucky for me, I had opened it... but hadn't actually read it. My husband called me and asked if I'd read it, which of course I then just had to do :rolleyes1.

So now I have that "pubic" memo posted to my cubicle wall (we now call it a pubical wall :rotfl:) so that whenever someone in the office gets cranky, I pull that out to make them laugh. :thumbsup2

From what I hear, I'm one of the few people in the organization that got the email open before it was retracted. pirate:

It doesn't surprise me in the least that a DISer would be able to make that claim! Good for you ;)
