Hi all,
I am applying to be an International student at the University of Saskatchewan and would be hoping to make a trip or two to FL while I am in school there. Any tips or advice for a maybe-soon-to-be-temporary-Canadian?
Thanks!

Hey Minnesota - Welcome to Saskatchewan - soon! :welcome:

Since you are from Minneapolis you know about cold so make sure you bring your winter gear. We don't have snow yet so depending on when you come, come prepared.

If you are flying from Saskatoon to Florida, expect to pay high airfare compared to what you are used to flying from MSP. We live in Regina and for our recent trip we drove to Minneapolis and flew from there. It's a long drive but we saved lots of $$$ for 4 people.

Your choice of airlines is limited from Saskatoon compared to MSP:
Northwest/Delta via MSP to MCO
United via Denver or Chicago to MCO
Westjet and Air Canada through a connection like Toronto or Calgary to MCO.

If you've got more specific questions about Saskatoon/Saskatchewan let us know. There are a few of us that hang out here.

Thanks! I really have my heart set on USK, I really hope I can get in. As for traveling from Saskatoon, I thought maybe take a train to Calgary or Winnipeg and fly from there? Maybe laughable but I was thinking a bigger airport than Saskatoon???

The train does go through Saskatoon but to Edmonton not Calgary. I believe there are seasonal flights from both Calgary and Winnipeg on WestJet that are non-stop.

I was able to get end of March 2010 flights from Winnipeg to MCO on NW for $396 CDN including taxes and fees.

S'toon to Winnipeg is about an 8.5 hour drive

It seems strange to think Winnipeg is about half way from Saskatoon to Minneapolis! Thanks for all the help! Send more :-) Trust me, If I am accepted into USK - I'll be asking you all A LOT more questions about Saskatchewan and WDW :-) I visited for a few days in July and just loved Canada.

What do plan to take at the UofS? When do you hope to come up here?

Ya Canada is a big place. Once you get to Fargo you can go north to Winnipeg or continue on to Bismarck on I94 and then north to Minot, Regina, Saskatoon. According to Google, both routes are almost identical in distance.

b-1, that is a great rate! Last Dec. we paid $420 on NWA from YQR to MCO. I've never seen rates that low since - hence the drive to Minneapolis in Oct.

I was fooling around with dates for spring break and when I saw it ( Good times too, arriving in MCO at 230pm and leaving MCo at 335pm) I pounced on it. I've had luck finding good rates on Sunday mornings for some strange reason.

We love saskatchewan and spend one week in the summer at a cottage at the Eston Riverside Park. It is well and truly in the middle of nowhere.

In S'toon we like to have fish and chips at Gibson's.

We also stop in Moose Jaw at the Temple Garden Spa, which is a lovely hotel with a hot spring pool.

Love Saskatchewan...still Bomber Fans though...

I am applying for Pharmacy Professional School and they have a really good program from what I have found. What I really like is their program seems to be community oriented rather than research. I have been in commuinty pharmacy for almost 9 years now as a Certified Technician and am looking to stay in community pharmacy as a pharmacist.

I won't find out if I am accepted until spring. If I am I would be moving to Saskatoon at some point the summer of 2010. Classes would start end of August 2010.

When I visited the campus and talked to the admissions officer I went to Saskatoon the straight north to Winnipeg, overnighted there, visited the Oriental Gardens and the Mint, then Trans-Canada 1 to Regina and back north again to Saskatoon. Overnighted there, interviewed, visited the zoo and Museum of Western Development, then went home through the International Peace Garden route. One thing that really amazed me about the drive though... the Canola Fields! I have never seen such huge fields of bright yellow before, and hte Flax in blue, kind of made the province look like a giant quilt!
