I started having pain in my feet around Thanksgiving and it just kept getting worse. Went to podiatrist in January, diagnosed with PF. Gave me an anti-inflamatory to take for a month, stretches and recommendations for specific inserts for my shoes. Things did get "better" but still struggling to get through my shifts at work (on my feet). :worried:

I bought vionic slippers for at home (dr. suggested) as well as vionic and spenco flip flops for my Florida trip. They helped as do the inserts but still feeling the pain.

Wondering if anyone has advice, suggestions, recommendations regarding healing up from PF? Any specific shoe recommendations? I'm mid 50's, could stand to lose 10 -15 lbs, not a runner (like to walk for exercise) and work part time job on my feet 4-5 hour stretches.

Thanks so much!

Thank you, yes I already have something very similar and use it daily. It does help and I know what you mean about the hurt part haha.

It took at least 6 months for mine to get better. I wore my tennis shoes with Dr. Scholls Active Series inserts all day/every day, still can't wear anything else. I did the stretches, stayed off my feet as much as possible, including not walking (was doing 45 mins/day).

I did stretches, heal inserts, wore supportive tennis shoes just about every day and still it took about 9 months to completely heal. It would get a better but as soon as I would resume my treadmill workouts or wear something other than tennis shoes for a day- it would flare up.

It sucked!! I'm so sorry!!

DH got inserts, slept with a boot, and rolled his foot on a frozen water bottle daily.

This shoe. Wear it around your house after work. It's got like a 90% success rate or something like that. It's much much higher compared to other orthopedic devices. PF sucks. I just got over it myself. Also, lots and lots of ice and stretching. Wear a boot at night.

yup - the nighttime boot, ice & stretching took care of it for me. It took several months to fully recover.

Wear shoes like Danskos to work and the right sneakers at home. No bare feet, no flip flops. Wear the inserts with all shoes.

Both my husband and best friend have dealt with bouts of PF. It ruined my DH's second Boston Marathon and he had to withdraw.

For each of them, once they started treatment and wearing the right shoes, doing exercises, etc. it was really almost a year before it healed.

OK, this is a multi step process.

1) Get custom orthotics.
2) Get Physical Therapy if you have the time. They will break up the scar tissue. Ask your doc for a script.
3) Once you get your custom orthotics, go to a shoe store with a certified pedorthist and get fitted for shoes.
4) Start exercising your core with Pilates, strength training. Stop walking exercise until your PF is better.

Basically the bottom of your feet is riddled with scar tissue and you have to break it up.

I do recommend rolling the golf ball as much as you can stand it. It is painful. Do it many, many times a day.

I had PF and Morton's neuroma. It took a yr for me to get healed but I was in really bad shape.

I'd avoid flip-flops. What helped me was supportive, cushioned running shoes and hiking/backpacking boots. I specifically bought the Salomon Comet 3d Lady GTX boots. This may seem like a crazy suggestion, but those boots gave my PF instant relief.

Good luck! Hope you feel better soon!

I had a flare up a few years ago, it took months to heal and for me what seemed to be the final healing item was when I switched to Dansko's for my everyday shoe. They were the best investment for walking/standing as they put the right amount of support/pressure on all the right places.

Like everyone else, I iced, stretched and tortured with golf balls, frozen water bottles etc.

I have only had this once, many years ago. I am very sorry for your pain. I'm sure many of the things already recommended will help. For me, this simple stretch, done whenever I could but definitely before bed, helped tremendously:

When you sit down in the evening, use golf balls or raquet balls to roll your feet on. It hurts but if you are consistent with that and stretching, you'll start to feel a difference. Sadly there's not a quick solution.

Danskos are what triggered my PF. Stretching, good supportive shoes, staying off the foot, and time is all that helped me. I was in a lot of pain for 4 months.

It was rough...I'm a RN on my feet a lot and I walk 3-4 miles on my days off. Sitting drove me crazy!

^ I second this stretch! I would also stand on the last step and drop one heel to stretch also, multiple times a day. Like everyone else, I switched to good shoes all the time! Even bought a pair of Birkenstock clogs to wear in my house as slippers. Good shoes have made a world of difference for me.

I use Powerstep orthotics, the Pinnacle model. I get them from the podiatrist but you can also get them on-line from the manufacturer or on Amazon. They're about $35, but they last a long time (I've had one pair for two years) and they're a lot cheaper than custom-made ones. They really help me a lot with my PF. I just throw them in the washing machine when they get stinky.

When I had a flare up of PF, my doctor gave me a cortisone shot and although it was the most painful shot I've ever received, my PF was under control in about 2 days.
