We are AP holders, planning to arrive 1/1-1/5 2019. We usually stay at POP, but for this trip, we're thinking of renting DVC points and stay in the EPCOT area (Boardwalk or Beach Club). I'm completely clueless about this, I've checked out DVC rental sites. The prices are supposedly comparable, but I've no idea about the pros and cons to renting DVC as opposed to straight booking at POP.
Any thoughts or inputs would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

The pros are you can stay at deluxes for value prices. The downside is these reservations are usually booked 7-11 months in advance so there’s little chance of availability for January. You’d likely have to find a confirmed reservation by this point. Another downside is these reservations are not able to be cancelled.

Your dates are not that far away, not sure how many DVC units will be available for then. What is the rate for Pop your getting?

Ya, I had the DVC site up and already logged in, there is nothing available right now with DVC.

Start learning about the process now so with your next trip you can be prepared early and try out the DVC.

I am a DVC member and I have also rented points and have had great experiences with who I went through. I lucked out and got DVC Poly right before you couldn't get just 50 points anymore. So I have found renting to be great because I still get my member benefits

The only thing I would disagree with is that you don't pay value prices. You won't get a studio for the $120ish that you would pay for a value room. It's probably closer to deluxe at the price of a moderate.

After staying at both, if it fits your budget and you can plan 7+ months out, I would stay at DVC. The rooms are much more comfortable and spacious. The resorts have many more amenities as well such as TS restaurants and other modes of transportation. The Epcot DVC resorts are within walking distance to both Epcot and DHS.

Have you considered offisite at all? Last month we stayed at Wyndham Bonnet Creek, which is next to the Caribbean Beach Resort, for the same price we would have paid at Pop Century. We usually stay on-site, but wanted a one bedroom unit. DVC rentals were booked up. We were pleasantly surprised at how nice the WBC was. Lazy rivers, pools, large balcony, w/d, full kitchen, many resort activities, and customer service that matched what we would expect at both Disney and Wyndham properties. We booked through a company called Vacation Strategy and were upgraded to a Presidential Suite--great views, and over 900 square feet versus less than 300 at Pop.

With DVC rentals, check out the FAQs - the 2 biggest differences in my mind was that the reservation could not be cancelled and that the Mousekeeping keeps a different schedule for DVC reservations.
