Advice please-dont want to lose our points

For the first time ever, we have** points that we will not be able to use this year before they expire. What would you do? We can't bank them - we borrowed them into this user year and then couldn't go on the trip we planned. Should we try to rent them? What are the restrictions as far as reserving close to the expiration date?

You certainly can rent them out to others. There is no penalty for trying to use them. Your only limitation will be whether or not you can secure the reservation for the person who is interested in renting your points.

I have never done this so don't have specifics as to how it is done, but I think there is a lot of information on the rent/trade board.

If you can't rent them, it might be possible you can transfer them into RCI and use them later for an exchange. I'm not sure if that's an option or not, but it might be.

You might try to see if you have a family member or co-worker who might want to rent a reservation from you. That would be the easiest way to get them used and make some cash.

Are there restrictions on making reservations in the last few months before the end of a user year? Like-can we only make a reservation at our home resort? Not sure how this works, we've always had to borrow from the next year before.

And I apologize for too many details in my original post - just wondered if it's a possibility to rent quite a few points like that - if we decide to rent we will put the post on the rent board.

You can make a reservation at any DVC up to the end of the life of those points ( start of your new UY).

You can't make a non-DVC reservation for the last four months of the UY during the last four months of the UY.

DVC rules. Probably because they have to recoup the cost of the trip and sell the points stay somehow. And don't feel four months is enough time to do it.

Found this out to be true ourselves. Tried to use some points that we forgot to book. Couldn't use them for any of the regular Disney resorts (like the Grand Floridian), couldn't use them for the Cruise Line. Basically we were restricted to using the DVC resorts.
