Hi everyone,

I've just booked a trip to WDW for my girlfriend and myself, its both of our first times.

We're going in September for 2 weeks, which coincides with both of out birthdays.

I'm a bit confused as to how far in advance we need to make reservations for the best restaraunts, could you please give me a few pointers?

Also, could you let me know which restaraunts we cannot miss

Thanks! :)

Craig

Welcome I believe dining ressies are allowed 180 day out from your date you plan on being there. I know its tough to think of what you want to eat in September. Just try to get a tenative schedule together and base your dining choices on that. You dont want to be cris crossing Disney World to go eat lunch or dinner! I like to start out or end with a character breakfast and then head to the closest park that day, example do Grand Floridian and take boat over to Magic Kingdom or reverse for dinner. IMHO you can not miss BOMA I love that place, the theming and resort are georgous! Take time either before your ressie or after to explore the trails out back the resort and get up close to the savannahs. I also like Crystal palace in Magic Kingdom wonderful food and I think one of the best buffets! I also like to walk through the international gateway over to Yacht & Beach Club for the Cape May Buffet. Give you a nice break from the park and you get to see yet another resort! Enjoy have fun and watch the boards for all the great tips!!!

Thanks for the help guys

I've also heard about booking restaraunts to get the best seats for shows (Fantasmic has been mentioned a lot)

How does this work?

Which restaraunts do you need to book for?

Thanks again!!

Hi!

I HIGHLY recommend LeCelier @ Epcot and that is a MUST to book at 180 days! It books fast! We also liked the Spirit of Aloha dinner at Polynesian. Also loved Chef Mickeys Breakfast! As far as the dinners for Fantasmic, we find doing the dinners are not necessary. We like goin in late and sitting in back so you get out quick before crowds! This last time we went in 5 minutes before it started and sat right up front on far right! Great view! Good Luck!

since you are going in September you should keep your eye out for a free dining offer. The last couple of years Disney has offered free dining with rack rate hotel room fees. There is no gaurantee they will do the same this year but ir might happen.

I had some friends who had booked a September trip a couple of years ago. I told them of the free dining offer and they saved around $600 on their trip.

Whether the new plan saves you money will depend on where you are staying and the types and numbers of meals you plan to eat. You have about six weeks to figure out meals (if they offer free dining again this year, which is not certain, than ADRs will be necessary in September for most places) prior to your 180 day mark and the free dining offer would probably not come out prior to that so you should be able to do a pretty good cost comparison.

How does this work? I've heard alot about it from these boards, and that the possibility of it being on in September is quite good.

Does it only apply to those staying in a disney hotel?

Also, the other question I've ben wondering about is the refil cup thing, are these valid in parks or only at resorts?

Thansk again !

Hi,

The refillable cups are only usable at the resorts.

I would suggest making ressies as soon as you can...180 days out. If you are unsure of the dates to call you can call Disney dining 407-wdw-dine or find a dining calculator online...I think there is one at allearsnet dot com.

Our favorites are: Ragland Road, Le Cellier and California Grill (which is a great location to watch Wishes). We are also going to try Blue Zoo this coming trip...we have heard amazing things about this place.

If you would like to make a ressie to watch Fantasmic, the best restaurant in MGM is Mama Melrose. This restaurant gets good and bad reviews...it is not like home cooked great italian food but it is good...in my opinion. I am not sure of the crowds when you are going but a dinner package may not be necessary.

I hope this helps. Have a magical time!

Me again!

Another thing we enjoyed doing is going to dinner at the Boardwalk (Spoodles or Flying Fish are good) and then heading to Jellyrolls for the evening...Its a dueling piano sing along bar. Fun! :thumbsup2

Oh, you can find alot of the menus posted on the DIS or go to the allears mentioned above and they list them as well.

ETA: Also, you can surprise your GF with a bday cake. There is info about this on the dining thread as well.

So, exciting!!! You guys are going to have a blast!!

California Grill is the restaurant on top of the Contemporary and if you time it right with Wishes (fireworks show in Magic Kindgom) you guys will love it. They turn the lights down and the music is piped into the restaurant. That is a definite birthday dinner. Its going to be 2 TC but you will get an appetizer, still no tip included (maybe you'll get free dining). Also if you tell me at time of booking they sprinkle confetti on the table for celebrations!!

We also love, Le Cellier - For pretzel sticks and the Steak, Whispering Canyon - for fun, Sci-Fi - For atmosphere, Spoodles - to hang at the boardwalk alittle, Tutto Italia, Epcot - New, Teppan Edo, Epcot - New, Grand Flordian Cafe - Breakfast, Brown Derby - Fantasmic Dinner 2 TC, Wolf Gang Puck Cafe - Downtown (nice night off from the parks). Another 2TC dinner BlueZoo at the Dolphin.

But I have to agree with the others, map out your stay and then figure out locations for all the great places to eat. Check out www.allears.com great menus and reviews. Also check out......

Sorry I didn't know how to add to this post!!!

Good Luck!!! Have Fun Planning!!!:yay:

Hope you have a fantastic first trip!

First, I would recommend to start getting a plan which park you might want to visit on which day. I know this does not yet have anything to do with dining, but you don't want to travel all over WDW to get to a restaurant. So, once you know, where you will spend the day, chose a restaurant in this park or at a resort close by. For finding out which days are best for each park, Tourguide Mike offers advice on this as well as the website of the Unofficial Guide to WDW.

Just as a side note, for a first time visitor, I would recommend to get as guide books the Passporter to WDW and possibly the Unofficial Guide. Both also have lots of info on restaurants, which should help you decide.

There are also a number of online resources with dining info, mainly allears.net (and overall very good and informative website) and here on wdwinfo.com at this link: http://www.wdwinfo.com/wdwinfo/dining/diningmain.cfm With this you should be able to find places that sound good to you. The restaurant board here (which you already found, the first really good step to any Disney planning!!) is also a great resource for dining reviews. Just don't be too confused by it, there will always be people posting here who have absolutely different opinions about each restaurant.

As others have pointed out, 180 days in advance is the earliest you can make an ADR. I think, if you are staying on property, you can make ADRs for up to 10 days at 189 days from the first day of your stay.

The other question is, should you? That's difficult. A few restaurants sell out very quickly, especially it seems to be the case for Chef Mickey, the Princess meals, and Le Cellier. If you want to eat there, I would advise to book as early as you can. For the others, it still makes sense, to book ADRs as soon as you can. You still might be able to change a few things around later on, but I think it is always better to get an ADR than not to have one. If you decide that you don't need it, cancel it, someone else will be happy to get it!

Also, keep in mind, that September is the month where the "Free Dining" used to be offered in the previous years. This is a special promotion by Disney where they offer a limited number of rooms for packages which include the Dining Plan without charging for it. This means that you get the credits of the (normal not deluxe) Dining Plan for free. This will not be applied automatically to an existing hotel reservation, you will need to make a new hotel reservation and cancel your old one in order to get this. There are a number of specialized internet travel agents (like Dreams Unlimited which is a sponsor of this site, but there are others as well) who will monitor available discounts for you and change your reservation in order to get you the best price. I am using one for the third time and it worked great for me! For more info on discounts check out the code and rates forum.

Back to the topic of the dining plan. As this gives you a table service meal every day, during this promotion table service restaurants are in high demand and you will most likely not have any chance to find a restaurant that will take you without an ADR. So for September those ADRs are essential!

This has become rather long, but I hope it had at least some useful information for you!

And my personal recommendations would be Jiko, Boma, Kona Cafe and California Grill!

I am not sure if it was answered for you or not, but yes the Disney Dining Plan is only for those that stay on site. You could stay in one of the lower cost hotels though. You really need to figure out what you are going to be doing during your 2 weeks first. How many days are you planning on doing off site trips (SeaWorld, Universal, Daytona.....). I love to stay on site, but depending on what your plan is it may not be best. I wish I could do the Dining Plan, but next time I go I am staying off site for 2 weeks. When staying off site it is best to try and get a place that either has a continental breakfast or that has a mini kitchen. I am lucky enough to have a MIL who is an RCI member, so we are getting a 3 bedroom townhouse. This will help us save money as we will have breakfast in almost every morning and maybe a few light meals as well. If you go to allears.net you can see all of the menus for parks and resorts. It can get pretty expensive to have too many table service (TS) meals, so you might just want to pick some favorites. The counter service (CS) meals can be pretty good if you check out the menus first. It isn't just hamburgers and hotdogs anymore. Good luck planning and be sure to ask your questions here as everyone seems to be really helpful and questions are answered very quickly.

Thank you all so much for this information, you've cleared up so many questions I had!

- And given me a lot to think about. Time to start looking into which resaraunts to reserve......

:) :) :)
