Can anyone offer any advice on the Dominican Republic? My Mum & Step-Dad would like to go on holiday there, prob next January, but don't know what part of the Island to go to. They would want at least a 4* hotel.

Any help much appreciated.

Went to Dominican republic in 1996 for our friend's wedding and found it to be a cheap carribean option. Lovely beach and great hotel and the all inclusive deal was awesome. Went with loads of friends and had a great time. Much better than our holiday to Jamaica imho.

Lots of great excursions. Of course can't compare to Disney but what can??

It depends what they want, there are a lot of all inclusives but also places to get away from it all. We loved it, It's a beautiful island and very friendly people.

My mum lived out there for 3 years. She started off on holiday in Puerto Plata I think it was, met a man and stayed til she passed away. She loved it over there but just be warned it is a great place as long as you stay within the hotel complexes (which includes the beaches etc by them) or with a reputable tour guide. Its not the sort of place where you can hire a car or bike and wander on your own.

They would go to an all inclusive resort. Last month they went to Cuba.

definately need 4* or above - the dom rep is notorious for tummy problems from dodgy food in 3* hotels. Its always the cheapest caribbean option but if they stick to 4* up they should be ok. as with all caribbean islands its not a safe place if you wander off the beaten path or flash jewellery around - common sense is needed as always. Some good hotel chains are RIU and Occidentals, they should be pretty safe bets.

Evening bump for you :)
Thanks for the Bump Kaylee.

They hadn't wanted to go as they had heard bad things about it, but then in Cuba lots of people were raving about it so decided to give it a try. Thanks for the names of those hotel chains.
