Advice on taking a toddler please...

Hello Dibbers

Not been around much recently...mainly due to the arrival of our baby boy last July. We are no looking at returning to our happy place and sharing it with him. We have a couple of options and different opinions between me and the hubby.

I would like to go Aug 2014 when little man turns 2 (in the july) where as the hubby wants to wait another year. (it has to be summer due to me working in a school)

What i have been considering apart from him being another year older is the price differences. When he turns 3 he will need a childs ticket so thats extra ££££. My question is when he is 2 does he need a 'childs' seat on the plane for comfort or would we have him on our laps. My gut is telling me he would need a seat really as we would all be comfortable which in that case it may be worth us waiting till 2015 :-( 9 hours is a long way with a 2 year old on our laps)

I can only give you my advice based on experience from a few years back when we took my God Son. Under 2 is no seat, which isn't as bad as you might think because you get a sky cot and usually snag the bulk head seats as a result! He'll be on your lap for take off, landing and any significant turbulence.

Going in the summer is tough going with the heat and a 2 year old doesn't get to do a huge amount because they're too small. My God Son spent a lot of his time asleep in his stroller and we didn't go in the heat of summer. Having said that it wasn't a bad experience.

We have been taking DD since she was 9 months and she will 5 in 7 weeks.

If they are under 2 then they can go on laps otherwise as soon as they turn 2 they have to have their own seat however I would not recommend taking a toddler over 1 on your laps. DD had her own seat from 15 months and it made the whole 9 hours a lot nicer

Her first trip was March at 9 months her second at 15 months was in September (and we did September for the next 2 years) and it was hot. She coped just fine. We went to the parks early, swam and napped in the afternoon and back out for dinner and more parks at night.

Honestly at 2 there is more than can do than not at Disney as they can do any ride without a height restriction and DD did all of them. At 2 she was also tall enough for Goofys Barnstormer. (She is VERY tall though as she is now 45")

We love taking DD and she loves it too

We are restricted to Summerholidays if we want to go for 2 weeks inless we look at Christmas. I am only returning to work part time and if there is anychance my job share will do my two days the week before Oct half term then thats our other possibility.

We went in Aug 2011 for our honeymoon for 3 weeks and managed the heat by going out early(rope drop most days) came back after lunch then returned in the evening. Its a hard decision as i dont want to be selfish and go back sooner because i want to. I also want it to be suitable for him as well.

Maybe you can time it to go before he is 3 (no ticket required) but close to his 3rd birthday? I know with school jobs you're really restricted and it will depend when his birthday falls. The cost difference won't be too significant. You will pay the same for the room and the flight (if he has a seat) regardless, the only difference will be his ticket which will be around £250.

Agree with all of this! We took DD at 5months, 16months and on her 2nd bday.

I would avoid Christmas at all costs.

Summer will be fine as you know how to manage it and honestly having him in his own seat will be so much better you all of you as he has his own space.

Thank you all...His Birthday is July...typical...if he has arrived late then it could well of been August lol ;-) We have a lot to think about and will be stalking deals for a little while yet lol xx
