Hi there, been back a week now and already longing to return, so.....

can anyone give me any advice on booking direct (ie not through the Virgin brochure) to stay at on-site at Disney.

I want to price up the option of a fly-drive with Virgin, and then independantly booking 4 or 5 nights at disney, a couple of nights at a US/IOA on-site hotel and then some time on the coast by way of a change.

Can I book a room only at Disney w/o any park tickets included as I have them already ( 3 days and 2 plusses left from our Hopper this year)

I have never stayed on-site and would appreciate any recommendations as to web-sites and any discounts available.

Thanks in advance, Paul.

Yes, you can book a WDW room only without passes - it's only the tour operators who seem to insist on adding them in whether you want them or not.

The best / biggest discounts for WDW on-site stays are usually for Annual Pass holders, but I guess you won't be getting APs if you still have hopper passes left.

One of the easiest ways to get the best WDW discounts around is to make your resort booking through Dreams Unlimited, who are affiliated to this site. If you ask for a quote, you'll probably get rack rate figures initially, but your agent will keep checking back for any discounts which apply to your booking and automatically get them applied if they're available. This takes the worry out of keeping on top of different offers being introduced and possibly missing out altogether. You also save on making phone calls to the US, as all contact is via e-mail with your agent.

For USF resorts, either sign up to the Loews loyalty scheme and/or try to join a Universal Fan Club membership scheme (check out the USF boards here for more information on how you can do this). Both these will sometimes get you better rates.

As with most things in the travel industry, you'll find more discounts during the slower seasons, although that's not to say they are completely unheard of during peak times.

Good luck! :)

Hi Keasden. Did you get on OK at the S Suites? We are off there on 8th March.

...its a worry you want to rebook so soon...maybe I ought to start saving for next year before we leave next week for this one!!!

I cannot help much on being independent and booking onsites as I am a VH booker to but I have learned a few gems I might use in the future while planning this one.......

A night (or maybe more?)can be booked for a good discount using the entertainment book rate at some of the excellent universal deluxe hotels. The book costs about $15 but much more was saved by the people who mentioned it. Surfing on ths site will probably bring up loads more detail on it for you.

If the one you book is a lowes universal hotel join their club and they give you a few freebies in the room.

Sign up to mousesavers.com for their monthly information email. Often has advice on good disney rates and rates for annual pass holders.

Not a lot of help, but hopefully some things to look out for.

Keswick,

you'll have no problems at the Springhill Suites. It is without a doubt the best hotel I have stayed in in the USA. Granted I only have the likes of Days Inn's and Quality Inn's to compare it against, but it is more of a traditional hotel in the UK style than the more normal 'motel' style establishments so common in the states.

All the rooms are off internal corridors instead of opening to the outside and the corridors are clean and bright. Security seems good too with access to the laundry and pool areas by room key card only. The key card also activates the car park barrier to let you back into the complex in the evenings.

There is a small gym, a food court that we never tried and a Golden Corral and Bahama Breeze right next door (don't drive to them, just walk past the food court which is situated between the Fairfield Inn and Marriot Courtyard opposite the SS.)

The complimentary breakfast is adequate but nothing special, just bread, bagels, pastries, muffins, cereal and fruit, with coffee and juice. This actually saved us a lot of money compared to previous trips, but then I am rather addicted to Dennys' breakfasts.

Our room was spotlessly clean and modern but not as big as I thought it might be. It is not a suite by any stretch of the imagination but does have a desk, settee, easy chair, sink, fridge, microwave and large TV at one end, then two beds and another large TV at the other end, so all-in-all it is still very comfortable.

There is no in-room safe, but you can get a safety deposit box at reception at no charge !

The location itself is great, just 5 minute drive to DD and just 1 min in the opposite direction to the Premium Outlets mall.

Opposite the GC and BB already mentioned is a steakhouse and seafood restuarant (we didn't use them) and just 3 or 4 minutes down the main road there is the crossroads shopping complex containing a variety of eating places including a TGI Fridays which had people queueing out the door every time we tried to go there.

A bit further still is a Sizzler, IHOP and Shoenys and in the opposite direction a Bennigans and Ponderosa.

The I4 junction is 2 mins away so getting to USF etc is nice and easy.

As you can no doubt tell, I was well pleased with the hotel and would not hesitate to stop there again.

Anything else you want to know, just ask.

PS if you're interested in Oakley sunglasses, all the shops seem to charge the same price, but ask nicely and I'll tell you where you can buy them tax-free and with a free hard case worth $20 included ! I bought two pair.:smooth:

This will not necessarily be of much use to you Keasden, but feel this might be of help to anyone who doesn't use or like the internet when buying stuff.

I have always found the best British travel agents to be Lunn Poly. There are undoubtedly better deals you can get if you do all the work yourself and using the internet, but if you want the best deals using a travel agent - Lunn Poly have always proved the best by us.

I have spoken with branch staff on the 'phone and in person and used their "call centre" via their website and every time have had excellent service. Most of them seemed to have visited Disney in Florida too so can often give you some useful tips. They are always polite, eager to please and seem to bend over backwards to get you what you want - not what is best for their pockets.

Yesterday, I called Lunn Poly on the 'phone to buy my Disney ten-day pass and various other Orlando tickets. 60 seconds after I put the 'phone down they rung me back. Their agent said their new brochure was coming out on Monday with cheaper prices. Lunn Poly didn't keep quiet to keep the profit, they 'phoned me up immediately!! I was very impressed!

Thanks Paul,

Yes! I was going to look for some Oakleys!....and Levis?..did you find somewhere for those too? Pleeeeeeeeeeeeese

A few little questions...

Did you see if there was a jogging trail there?
Where any of the restaurants you mentioned particular faves?
Do we need to pack towels or were the aplenty in the rooms and by the pool?
Was your Virgin flight good?
Was there a supermarket locally?

Paul - recommend Dreams Unlimited for on-site at Disney, we have used them for our stays at AKL and last year at the Poly. They sort out everything for you, including an itinerary for best days at your fave parks and any PS's you would like:D

As for Universal Hotels, we've stayed at the HRH the last couple of years and I got rates (for October) of $160 per night for a pool view room using my (free:D ) Loewes Hotel loyalty card. For your first stay on-site at US using the Loewes card you get a free gift of either wine, milk and cookies or something else which I can't remember!

Personally - and this is just my view - the benefits of staying on-site at HRH (or any other US hotel) are far superior to the cost of staying on-site at Disney in terms of $. Front of line access, literally a 5-6 minute walk to USF and another couple of mins to IOA, or take the lovely water taxis. You really do feel as though you're being treated "specially".

Saying that, we loved our stays both at AKL and last year the Poly. Since we were only visiting MK and Epcot, the Poly was the best in terms of Monorail. It's a beautiful place. But then I think any Disney resort is.

I believe the current Entertainment Book expires at the end of October. Our stay goes inot the first few days of November also. If we decided to stay at a Loews Universal hotel say from 30th October to 3rd November would we need to buy two books to get the Entertainment rate?

Keswick, think I can help you with most of those queries,

Jogging Trail - Didn't see one as such, but did see one or two joggers on the road directly outside the hotel.

Fave restaurants - Personally, there were no stand out ones for me but the kids loved the Golden Corral and Ponderosa, however I am aware that the topic of these buffet restuarants has been debated to death elsewhere on these boards, so I won't bother here. My wife said her favourite was the TGI Front row on I-Drive right up near the junction with Sandlake Road.

Which reminds me of something else, if you go to the Virgin welcome meeting you can buy a 'kids eat free' card for $15 which is good for one child per adult ie 1 card for a family of four. Not all restaurants are included but notable ones that are include, all sizzlers, all ponderosas, Race Rock cafe, TGI Front Row (I-Drive only), Houlihans and several others. Very good value for just $15.

Towels - DO NOT PACK TOWELS for use in the hotel. There was a mountain of them left in our bathroom everyday, and unlimited free towels by the pool. You can rent them at the Disney waterparks for $1 each.

Flights - The Virgin flights were excellent both ways. We flew from Manchester on Honey Pie both ways and have no complaints at all. In previous years they flights home have been a bit bumpy, not so this year. The kids meals on the planes are barely edible, but we were prepared for that and packed sandwiches for them.

Supermarkets - Exit the hotel, turn left (towards Premium outlets) and just past the first entrance to PO is a very large Publix supermarket on the left hand side. We went there several times and the costs are much much lower than the smaller Walgreens which is about the same distance from the hotel in the opposite direction. Publix is about 3 mins drive at most and is like shopping in a huge Tescos but cheaper and with more choice.

Which brings me on to the Oakley sunglasses. Next to Publix is a small parade of shops, just one of which is a sunglasses retailer. We got chatting to the owner and he told me that all the shops have to sell their Oakleys at the same price, as dictated by Oakley, and that they regularly checked up on their retailers. A colleague of mine has a relative who works as a distributor for Oakley and she had told me something similar before we left. This is also borne out by the prices of the glasses which seem to be available in just about every other shop in Orlando, but the price hardly ever varies. The shop I have described above said he would pay the sales tax (6%) and throw in a free hard case. He does not openly advertise this fact.

I checked elsewhere and could not better his price of $100 on a pair of half jackets (nice champagne colour :smooth: ) and when I bought them he was good to his word and did charge me $100 dead and give me an Oakley case which other retailers were asking $20 for.

On the last day I had a few TC's burning a hole in my pocket so went back for a nice pair of blue framed half wires (black iridium lenses :smooth: ) which I had tried on at both the Mall at Millenia and Premium Outlets and been quoted $155 plus tax plus $20 for the case. He didn't have any blue ones in stock but phoned his partner who was opening their other shop that day (next to Hallmark in the crossroads shopping centre) and confirmed he had a pair and off we went en route to the airport. Glasses purchased at $155 dead including case.

The best part, the exact same glasses in the UK cost £89 (+ £20 for the case) for the half jackets and £135 (+ £20) for the half wires. Result.

Anything else, just ask as I feel like I am reliving my holiday having to think of these things.

And to everybody else (if anyone else is still reading this far - thansk for all the suggestions so far, keep them coming)
